i made cake "truffles"
i used the concept of the cake pop. i didn't have the lollipop sticks, i didn't have chocolate. what i did have was mini cup cake paper and the ingredients for royal icing.
i used white cake mix, white frosting, royal icing with a little red food coloring, and then i sprinkled crushed candy canes on top
this was for a co-worker's bday, today.
here are pics:
i must say that i don't love them the frosting mixed with the cake makes the whole thing too soft/wet for my taste.
i'm willing to try it again with a more interesting cake/frosting combo... and definitely using chocolate to cover them.
i called them "cake truffles" and everyone in the office was very impressed

They look like raw meatballs!
I wasn't too fond of the texture of cake balls either.

Haha they do! Next time, use a little less frosting (I usually do), and dip them in chocolate and add the candy canes while the chocolate is still kinda wet.
I bet they tasted pretty good though! ETA: I don't use royal icing at all..

what is royal icing?
royal icing is the edible "glue" used to hold together gingerbread houses. it's also used to decorate sugar cookies.
there's a recipe around here that doesn't use raw egg whites... for those baking/decorating with little kids.
i made it a littel runny so it would cover the entire ball. if i do it again, i would use a thicker icing b/c there was too much "see through" to it
