What can I sub for Whiskey??
We have someone who does not drink coming to Christmas dinner which I'm hosting/making this year. I have a fabulous recipe that I saw on Semi Homemade (today on the Food Network) and I really want to make it but it calls for Whiskey -- anyone experienced enough to recommend something instead?
I want to make sure the flavor and great taste is still there!
Here is the recipe: http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/sandra-lee/pork-crown-roast-with-royal-glaze-and-gravy-recipe/index.html
CLICK!!!!
Any suggestions??

The alcohol in the whiskey evaporates when cooked. I would use the whiskey.

Re: What can I sub for Whiskey??
Whiskey has a really distinct flavor and that's kind of a lot of whiskey that they call for. I would either eliminate it or replace it with maybe a pear juice or tart cider.. if you REALLY felt strongly about it. But to be honest I think it will lose a lot of the original intent. It would probably still taste good though!
The 'alcohol' mostly burns out.. it's the flavor and depth that remains. Are you worried about them tasting it or actually having alcohol?

If the person is a recovering alcoholic I would eliminate the whiskey from the recipe all together. Although most alcohol burns off - some of it still there.

This person is in AA and is a recovering alcoholic - so, it doesn't matter that it evaporates. This person cannot even take Cough Medicine or use Listerine without buying the special alcohol free version, for example.

I would make a test batch with sparkling pear juice and see how it comes out.
