difficult 3rd trimester
My pregnancy was going along so well during my 2nd trimester- I hardly felt pregnant! However, once the 3rd hit, it all went downhill. I had a terrible pinched nerve in my neck & was home from work for three days & in bed for 6. Had to have my dad come down & take care of me. Thank goodness for chiropractors!!
Then, I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes and put on the strict diet & testing my glucose level. When that completely failed to regulate my sugar levels, I started insulin injections. I have always had major anxiety about needles but somehow have overcome that and have been doing very well with the injections. Problem is, they are making my blood sugar very very erratic. I have low numbers (very very low) at least once a day now- the OB is playing around with the insulin dosages to try to regulate it. Unfortunately, I have major hypoglycemia symptoms once a day (for about 4 days)- not pleasant.
In addition, the OB told me that with insulin-dependent diabetics, they will not let you go past 39 weeks- when I asked why, he told me because of the increased risk of stillborns! You don't use the "s" word with a woman who is 34 weeks pregnant! I lost it in the examining room. OB was very reassuring and told me they won't let that happen, of course, and are monitoring me & the baby very closely. He also thinks the baby is breach. Also said that with inductions, there is an increased chance of a c-section. And I'm measuring small, which could be a problem.
So now he wants me in twice a week- tomorow is a growth sono & then two non-stress tests a week.
All this news at one appointment. It was overhwelming & so upsetting.
Fortunately I'm home from school now, which gives me lots of time to get the house in order, go for walks, relax & sleep, and go to a zillion doctor's appointments every week!
July is going to be a long month!! Thanks for letting me vent- it helps relieve the stress!

Re: difficult 3rd trimester
You are a strong woman and will get through it
I had a very difficult pregnancy too, especially the end of the 2nd and all of 3rd trimester. It's trying on the emotions and def tested my strength. I kept telling myself, I can do it, I am strong, everything will be okay, and just do what the dr's tells me to do. I looked at it as many of the 1st sacrafices you make for your children.
Hang in there

Im sorry you have to go through this. But there is light at the end of the tunnel- its only a few more weeks. You made it 34 weeks, you can make it another 5. Hang in there, your baby will be here before you know it.

Re: difficult 3rd trimester
I am a type 2 diabetic (insulin injections 4x's a day) and had gestational w/my first. No one has every said anything to me about the baby being stillborn It was that they didn't want the baby to get too big and you also run the risk of extra amniotic fluid.
For the low blood sugar I find that if you eat small meals through out the day it is less likely to happen. When I skip meals is when I have really low blood sugar (which I agree is very scary)

Re: difficult 3rd trimester
Thanks for your support ladies. It's just a lot to process at once.
I'm very good about sticking to my diet plan from the dietician (which is ridiculously strict!!), but my levels are still all over the place- OB is still trying to figure out the correct dosages for me.
5 more weeks!!

Re: difficult 3rd trimester
what are your numbers? do you have any family history of diabetes and/or considered high-risk for GD? why the insulin if your numbers are so low?
i was diagnosed with GD and was on insulin. my numbers were borderline and i thought it was ridiculous for me to be medicated. i am also very skeptical about GD diagnoses in general, but that's a whole other story...
i believe back in the day there was thought that GD was linked to stillbirths, however currently the major concerns are big baby and hypoglycemia for the little one at birth. having GD also increases the potential development of regular diabetes for the mother in the future.
hang in there! i went through it and all was fine. DD weighed 8 pounds at birth via c-section (dropped a bit and is gaining back now) with no complications.
