Am I wasting my time
Well A little history first. I have had two miscarriages in the past year We got pregnant on out own both times despite DH low Sperm count. My cycles are very regular and they have not found any other problems other then the sperm count. My RE recommends that we do aleast 4 IUI w/clomid. I have already done two (second one was yesterday.
Here is my question. Am I wasting time doing IUI's because of the low sperm count? I am reading that count should be atleast 5 million. First IUI it was 1.1 million and second was 1.4 million.
what do you ladies think?

Re: Am I wasting my time
Are you afraid that you should go right to IVF? I don't know if I'd call it a waste of time; you've gotten pregnant twice so there's definitely a chance that his little swimmers know how to get where they're going. And you have an even better chance with IUI than you had naturally.
In my opinion (although mine is not as informed as most of the other ladies' here) IVF is a really big, invasive step and I would want to try other avenues before it if my doc thinks there's a chance they'll work. In the grand scheme of things 2 months isn't too long to wait, especially if you're actively trying and following your RE's protocol.
Whatever you decide, good luck. It's a hard decision and there is no one right answer - there's only what's right for you and DH, and what you're comfortable with.

Re: Am I wasting my time
I don't really think that I am ready for IVF and I know that in the grand scheme of things 2 months is nothing. But I still can't help but feel like I am wasting my time with these IUI. I just hoped that they would give us more direction on how to increase his count and stuff like that.

I definately don't think you are wasting your time because you got pg twice despite the low sperm count. Ivf is alot and if you aren't ready I definately wouldn't go that avenue just yet. I would however address the two miscarriages. Did they tell you a reason for them?

That's kind of what they're doing by having you do the IUI's. They could've had you start with clomid and timed intercourse, but like PP said, an IUI increases your chances. Don't feel like you are wasting your time, you're being proactive!

The first miscarriage was a lost at 14 weeks due to triplody(69 chromosomes) believed to be caused by two sperm fertilizing one eggs or something being wrong with the egg itself. The second one was a bilighted ovum w/ a totally different chromosomal issue. They ran gentic testing and all the miscarriage screenings and everything was normal so they basically think they were both just a fluke.

Re: Am I wasting my time
I don't think you're wasting your time at all. It took me 5 IUIs to get PG. The cycle we got PG my DHs count was just over 4 million the first day and 1.4 million the second day. There was a story on her that someone knew someone who got PG with IUI and only 3 (yes, three!) spermies. It only takes one! I say if you're not ready for IVF, def keep moving along with the IUIs until you are. Good luck!!

Re: Am I wasting my time
Did you have any immune testing done?
I would do that before I would try any more IUIs.
IVF could have eliminated the two sperm theory.
people don't miscarry for no reason.
Good luck.

Re: Am I wasting my time
Obviously this is a very personal choice, but ...A few things would go into giving an answer...Do you have insurance, how old are you and how soon do you want to be pregnant?
Looking back, IUIs were a waste of time and energy because we had insurance for IVF. IVF increases your chances dramatically and really, its not so bad. (i thought) M/C and the waiting was way worse for me.

In this case, I would go right to IVF. Your chances of conception go WAY up with IVF.

Re: Am I wasting my time
If your husband has only sperm count issue and NOT motility issue, I think you still have a chance. Although, IVF does give you a higher probability of getting pregnant. I think it really depends on if you are mentally ready for the whole IVF process and if you are financially able to do it.
