overall its pretty fast once they start, maybe 3 minutes. No pressure pain until they fully inflate the balloon and it feels like a really bad menstral cramp. Its over really fast and youll get your results right there!!! After you may need a pad but its so fast and not a huge deal...

I've had two. The first one was pretty easy, I was in and out. It is uncomfortable while they are inflating the balloon. Some people say to take a tylenol or advil before hand. You may have some leaking or spotting after so bring a pad with you.
The second one, the machine brokw down half way therough the test. They had to literally take x-rays positioning me a few different ways with the balloon and dye in me. I wanted to shoot the techs doing the test.
Good luck!

Everyone has a different experience. Some people on here went during a lunch break! Hopefully that will be you!I, personally, was in horrible pain that lasted for the rest of the day. Definitely take Motrin before you go. I think the "procedure" took about 5-10 minutes. Then u leak for awhile---kind of gross, but I guess it could be worse. After they were done, the dr came in and told me that everything was clear. I was relieved bc I didn't have to wait for the results. HTH! GL!

ITA, I've read different stories. Truth, it was one of the worst experiences I've had during the TTC process. It was uncomfortable and I am happy to never to it again! My OB/GYN sent me for the procedure and when I was sent to a RE they wanted to do it again and I begged not too! I can't remember if it was recommended by a close friend who had the procedure done before or by the office I was having the procedure done at, but I had someone bring me and drive me home. I NEEDED IT. I instantly felt the worst cramps and hot flashes. I didn't take any pain relievers before, but I did take two when I got home and slept for a few hours after.

My experience was not a pleasant one, but I also had a blockage so I think that makes it even more uncomfortable. It was super quick so the pain did not last long at all. Take some Motrin before you go. I did not have anyone drive me and I was still okay. Like PP said, you will have leaking afterwards so bring a pad. Hopefully you will be one of the lucky ones and it will go smooth. I have to say, I found it very cool to watch on the screen though. good luck!

Mine was pretty bad, BUT I sincerely think it had to do with the fact that the person performing it was a complete and utter TOOL !

He knocked over the betadyne ( all over the floor), he and the nurse were arguing ( he had a very thick accent and they were having language issues) , he seemed very inexperienced- I'd go so far as to say I think I was the first patient he ever did one on Chat Icon

He also used the wrong sized balloon on me and in essence I had to go through the whole thing twice Chat Icon , so mine took twice as long...

But, in the end when it was done it was done and I felt nothing afterwards...

From what I have read on here, my experience is not the norm so I'm sure you will be just fine Chat Icon

Re: Can you ladies please share you experience with a HSG if you've had one

I just had this done last Wednesday. It was fine. Not pleasant, but fine.

For mine, the doc had trouble inserting the catheter and it took about 10 minutes total instead of the usual 3. The first 5 or 6 minutes was like menstrual cramps, and then like the others said, one or 2 minutes of really bad, burning cramps. But psychologically it's not too tough because you know it'll be over so quickly.

Afterwards, I was pretty shaky for 10-15 minutes so I was glad DH was there with me to drive me home. I'm sure I could have done it, but it was nice to just relax. My body felt a little weak (it had been through a trauma! That doc really couldn't get the catheter through my tubes). That night and the next day I had a little soreness (felt like a bruise inside my stomach) and bleeding. I bled for 2 or 3 days - no one told me that that was going to happen so I was a little nervous, but it went away by Saturday.

Oh, and my RE insisted that I take 2 Advils two hours before the procedure and 2 more Advils an hour before, so I had 4 Advils in my system when it was being done. I didn't need any afterwards.

Mine wasn't so bad. It felt more or less like bad AF cramps for a little but it went away as quickly as it came. They let me watch on the screen as the dye was going through so that kept my attention off the pain a bit. I agree with the other posters - take a little motrin. They should have a pad to offer you but just to be safe bring one for yourself. I didn't really spot much afterwards. Do you know where you are having it done?

I've heard many mixed experiences with this procedure but mostly I've heard people say it wasn't so bad. It is uncomfortable, but not the worst thing so try not to stress too much. (Easier said than done - I know).

I had one done 2 weeks ago. No pain at all.....and barely and pressure. If you have never had a vaginal birth ask them to use the smaller catheter, i think that made a big difference. I had no blockage and only felt the leaking right after.

I think a lot has to do with the Dr. performing it.

I totally agree. It has a lot to do with the dr performing it. Mine was great - absolutely awesome. He was fast, smooth, explained everything, even a little funny! It felt like this was the millionth he'd ever done, yet still important and cautious. That said, I took 3 motrin before, had a little leakage, a little cramping, but not even as bad as AF cramps. It was uncomfortable, but not painful for me.

I found the fluid ultrasound I had the day before to be more uncomfortable/ painful. I think that the pain for me on that one was opening the cervix. (Also, no Motrin there.) Otherwise, just pressure.

Good luck! Think positive thoughts and breath. The more relaxed you can be, the better.
