pasta boiling question

Actually it pertains to anything you boil.

Do you put the salt in before it boils or after?

If I am cooking pasta.....sometimes I will not add salt and add a drop of olive oil to the water instead. Works just as good.

Re: pasta boiling question

You should add it after it boils. Something to do with the salt sinking to the bottom, settling and rotting the pot gradually.

I use the salt to actually salt the pasta..I think if it cooks in salty water it has more flavor.

It is advised not to put olive oil in the water as it causes whatever sauce you are putting on it to not stick to it!

Oh...and to answer the question, I add the salt after it boils

Re: pasta boiling question

After it comes to a boil.

If you add salt while the water is cold, the water will take longer to come to a boil.

Re: pasta boiling question

wow Im glad you posted this. I always add it before. but after reading that it 1. makes the water take longer to boil, and 2. can rot the pot over time, I am glad to learn about this! I always just figured to add it right away! Chat Icon

I heard that too. i stopped doing tha a while ago. I add a little grated cheese to the pasta right after draining and before I sauce it so the sauce really sticks too.
