Messy desk @ school

Yesterday I was at my DD's Daisy meeting at school and my DH called that DS #1 left his math book at school. I was able to walk to his classroom and get his book but wow, what a messy desk! Not overflowing with garbage and filth but books put in in any old way, supplies loose, etc. I took a peek around and most of the desks are pretty neat. I am not anal but I like things sorted and organized so I was sort of twitching at the sight of his desk.

Say something or let it go? Should I be teaching him something or accept that neatness is not his forte? I can't exactly make him be neater at school. It sounds small but I'm sure as parents everyone can relate to that struggle between what is helping and what is imposing your own will on them. I am constantly trying to keep myself in check, esp with DS #1. We butt heads a lot.

SD's desk at school is the same way...but unless we are on top of her at home, her room looks that way too.

I never said anything to her about her desk at school, I don't see the point of starting an argument over something I never see and have no control over.

As a mom of three and a teacher, I personally would say something but casually. In my class I try constantly to remind the kids how to organize their things or put their books in their desks so they don't get bent / ruined. As much as I try for some it never helps. Maybe if they know that you saw the desk it might help them want to clean it up a bit especially knowing you'll be looking at it for P/T conferences.

I was like that in elementary school - I had stellar report cards except neatness. It was ALWAYS pointed out to me, but I really didn't care. I wasn't a mess at home (I would clean my room regularly) and by 8th grade I was a pretty neat and organized kid.

Well this gives me hope bc he is like that. He gets great grades. I worry that if he doesn't organize better, it will affect him as stuff gets harder. But in general I don't think if I mention something he ever thinks about what I said later and says "Hey that's a good idea" - he seems to prefer resisting my suggestions. I don't even care if everything is lined up to perfection, I just think if he's always searching for something, it is a distraction to what he needs to focus on.
