So, Ava inherited her father's eyesight.
My poor Ava went to the eye doctor last week and she has to wear glasses full time I was really upset at first, but we went to go pick out her glasses yesterday and she looks SO adorable. I'm hoping this will really help her now because she's been having a terrible time seeing everything The guy in the eye place said, "You might want to get plastic frames, these lenses are going to be thick!" Poor kid! Does anyone else have a 4 year old with glasses? Anything I should expect?

awww...I am sure she looks adorable.
My little sister has worn glasses since she was like 3. It just becomes part of their routine and life...
I would DEFINITELY have at least two back-ups....especially now as she is adjusting.

Re: So, Ava inherited her father's eyesight.
She's gotta look SOOO cute!!
Robbie's been wearing glasses since he was 6 or 7. He's got TERRIBLE vision (he was actually at Dr. Cossari's office for his annual and they DOUBLED his prescription - he's 20/200 in one eyes and 20/400 in the other!).
I can tell you that we do not get plastic because it breaks and just wrecks the entire set so they can't be salvaged - we found that out the hard way. Robbie has some sort of flexible titanium type frame. We also found out that they make a special sort of spring hinge that helps when they are rough. And Polycarbonate lenses. He also has that special lens that tints in the sun. I think it looks goofy but the eye doctor said it can help protect against eye damage.
Robbie wound up being really responsible with his glasses (after breaking them a few times early on). He puts them in their case before bed, always puts them on in the morning. Its his routine and he's got it down. He's got zero issue with them from a self confidence perspective because he enjoys seeing! I didn't expect that because *I* used to lose, break and refuse to wear my glasses when I was little!
Please post pics soon!

Re: So, Ava inherited her father's eyesight.
I've worn glasses my whole life and they have been as thick as coke bottles Now a days, they can reduce the thickness of the lenses so much, so I wouldn't worry about that. I am very vigilant with my kids eyesight and exams, since I am so near-sighted. I think kids look so adorable, I wouldn't worry at all! My parents wouldn't let me get contacts until I was 16 and I survived!

Jordan has been wearing glasses since 1st grade. She has been very responsible with them. The one lesson that I learned was, when we were picking out her first frames I really pushed her into the metal frames(as did the the man that was fitting her) and she did NOT like them. They were not what SHE wanted. She did not wear them nearly as much as she should have because of it. From that point forward, I let her pick what made her happy and it is sooo much better.

Re: So, Ava inherited her father's eyesight.
Thanks, girls. We've kind of made it like she's the lucky one out of everyone for getting to wear glasses, like it's some special privilege, and it seems to have worked because she's super excited! We already ordered the plastic frames, but we also ordered a back-up pair that has a metal frame so we can compare both. Sigh..I really hope she keeps them on because I can totally see her getting tired of them. But then again, I think the dr. said she's 20/200 in both eyes and I'd imagine she'll enjoy actually seeing now!

Crashing. Not a parent (yet!) but I worked for an eye doctor that specialized in kids for years.
Having to have your four year-old wear glasses might feel like the end of the earth, but w/20/200, your child's vision issues are treatable. She'll be much happier that she can see, and will likely enjoy school more b/c of it.
Make sure that the frames have a spring (they'll take more abuse) and that the lenses are polycarbonate (which is the safest lens material b/c it's almost indestructible). Keep in mind that as she grows, her Rx is going to change.
Good luck!!
