How much is your original mortgage?
I don't want to know your monthly payment, just the total amount of the mortgage you took out with the bank when you bought your house. We are thinking of refinancing in order to expand the house, but the dollar amount seems so huge, especially compared to what I have now. I'm trying to see what's average - maybe I won't feel so bad. Thanks!

I guess I'd just be average if I refinance then - my original was in the 100k to 150k range (don't remember the exact amount) and the new one would be in the 250k-300k range. Thanks everyone - I feel a little better about taking on such a large loan.

I didn't have a mortgage when I bought the house with my former fiance but DH & I refinanced & took a 160K mortgage to pay off debt & do construction on the house.

Sorry to hijack, Washington Mutual offers a HELOC with a fixed rate option, which is what we have. DH works there, so I am partial, but I really like the program. We were able to fix the rate and we can "unfix" and "refix" if the rates go down.

160,000 0n a 200,000 home.
YES...we bought the house 8 and a half years ago. AND YES....we are sooooooooo excited knowing how much we could sell it for now!!!

We owe 75K. DH bought the house 10 years ago for 185K. Only 7 years left.
