5 year check up....
Bella went for her annual check-up When did she get so freaking big?
Anyway...she grew 2 and a half inches and gained EIGHT POUNDS! I thought that seemed crazy, but the doc isn't concerned. She now checks in at 43 inches and 44 lbs. She eats 3 meals a day and has a healthy snack at school. And she is an amazing eater...she eats Tilapia, Salmon, Steak, sausage, fresh fruit, and veggies like green peppers, carrots, and broccoli. But that weight gain was nuts to me
She also got three shots Flu, Polio, and DTAP. Such a trooper....she only cried after the DTAP because it burned. They they did her CBC and cholesterol...kid LOVES watching her blood get taken...she was mesmerized. Her cholesterol was higher than he would like at 186, which is EXACTLY what it was the last time they checked at 2 years old. Again, he didn't seem too concerned, even though he is quite conservative with things.
All and all a great visit. He is thrilled with her verbal and emotional skills. Although she has to work on her stranger danger. Nothing like striking the fear of God into a 5 year old....
Anyone's children at this age experience a big weight gain? I am not making a huge deal out of it, but I also only have one child to obsess over She is in the 75% for height and weight.

Re: 5 year check up....
Katherine just had hers on Friday.
Actually, we had the opposite situation. She only grew ONE inch in a year and three lbs. My little peanut is 38 lbs. and 40 inches. That's about 15% for height. My pediatrician isn't concerned at all and the parents are no Amazons , but you know how it goes... I'm a little surprised, I guess. I knew she was one of the smallest in her class, but figured it was because of the later birthday...
Meanwhile, I think she's developing a complex because her 3.5 year old sister is only slightly shorter--and is always 75%-90% for height and weight--and we get asked (with no exaggeration) every time we go out--if not several times--if they are twins. She always says, "Mommy, but I'm the big sister."
Anyway, great news on the wonderful check-up! We have to go to the lab for blood which I am sure is not going to be quite the same experience as Bella's was!!

Re: 5 year check up....
At his 5 year check up, my DS had gained seven pounds and grew four inches. He's off the chart for height and about 75% for weight. Hard to believe because he was so tiny when he was born.

Robbie had a fairly big weight gain - 7lbs and 2 inches. He's now 54 inches and 72lbs at age 9 (55% height/72% weight)

We had an opposite experience too - Noah's 7 and only slightly bigger than most of your 5 year olds! He grew 2 inches but actually LOST a pound. He's only 45" and 41lbs (10% height/>5% weight). The height percentile is about the same as it's been, but the weight is a drop. The doctor doesn't seem to be concerned - Rob and I don't exactly hail from the Land of the Giants. But he's KEENLY aware of the fact that he is the smallest in his class.
I guess my philosophy is that as long as you feel like your kids are happy, healthy and thriving - and your pediatrician feels the same - it is fine! Bella is GORGEOUS and I don't think you have any reason for concern!

Re: 5 year check up....
Sounds like she did a great job!!! Wish my son would take shots that easily. We have to wrestle him down.
Kevin had his 5 yr checkup in February. He did have a big increase..but he was big to start - I guess. He has been consistently 75-85%ile for height and weight since probably age 2 (before that he was always like 90 %ile). He went from just under 42 in to 45 in (he is probably 47ish now). He went from 40-41 lbs to 47-48lbs (he had hit 50 shortly after but now if back down to the 47-48lb mark after his hunger strike this summer).

Wow you are so lucky to have a good eater! My two won't try anything if they don't like the way it looks or smells!

Re: 5 year check up....
My DD had a big bump up between 5 & 6. She was light as a feather at one time and while she is still slim, she is solid. She's a good eater too, my best one. She will eat a large variety of healthy stuff (not that she will refuse junk) and ask for it so I am happy. Her foot grew by 1 1/2 sizes too. Practically overnight. My older son has been more of a steady climber with weight, he's almost 8 and never had a huge bump up any year yet.

Re: 5 year check up....
THANKS EVERYONE....I wasn't concerned, but it is great to hear everyone's experiences. The funny thing is that she is STILL in 4T pants that we have to cinch the waist and she is just getting into size 5 shirts.

I know what you mean. Bella appears way bigger than some of my friend's kids and they always ask if she is older...meanwhile she is younger. I hate that these comments could lead to a complex, because they are innocent for the most part....but I notice that Bella is started to really see and hear what people say about her. For now, she could care less

Honestly, I say it all the time here...but a big reason that Bella eats so well is that Yo Gabba Gabba song "Try it, You Might Like it" We used to sing it all the time and I tell her, try it once and if you don't like it, you don't have to eat it again. 8 times out of 10 she likes it enough to eat more. I NEVER was exposed to the food that I have been having her try. I mean, I didn't try guacamole until I was in college and this kid can eat a bowl of it
