Anyone had their child repeat Kindergarten?

My son started 1st grade but during the first week he was struggling. We made the decision to put him back in Kindergaten with the teacher's recommendation.

Has anyone ever had to do this before and how long did it take your child to adjust? I think he just realized what we had to do,

I just had this discussion with my friend. She ended up deciding over the summer that her DS was better off in Kindergarten again, so she is having him repeat K. But she did move him from a private school to a public school, so I am not sure how much he understands the whole thing.

My mom also did it with my brother, way back when. It was the best choice for him, although I torment my mom that it wasn't fair to me to have my brother in the same grade (he is a year old, so he ended up in my class!).

My girlfriend just did it for her son. It was the right decision & it seems to be helping him.

Thank you for the responses. Instinctlively I knew he wasn't ready for 1st grade b/c I kept asking his Kindergarten teacher if she thought he was ready and she said yes. I even have a note from her telling me so.

I know it's the right thing to do and that he will get over it. Right now is just hard.

I wish I had done that with my youngest. He def would have benefited. He struggles in school

Did this with my oldest son but had made the decision by the end of the school yr. Best thing I could of done! He struggled the 1st yr of Kindergarten and developed low self esteem by the 2nd yr he felt so good about himself because he was able to help other kids instead of being the one that needed it. He is now in 7th grade and his grades are great. As for him adjusting he did fine with it but I think it also helped because his cousin and him are only a day apart and the my sons bday is on the school cut off line so the 1st yr he got to go but not my nephew and the 2nd time they got to go together. It will work out.
