What would you do?

OK I am curious to see what other Mommies would do in this situation. I am not judging, every Mommy is different so please be honest.

My Mother brought my daughter to work todayChat Icon Chat Icon After I took her around to see some people we decided to go to lunch at a diner and to get her out of my school because it was sizzling. Anyways, we get to the diner and she pitches a fit! I mean a HUGE fit! She didn't want to sit in the high chair, she was screaming crying throwing things and even threw one toy that hit me in the head- I have a nice bump from it. Anyways I kept saying to my Mom I am not doing this. I am not going to ruin other people's lunches that are sitting around us. I picked her up and said forget it. My Mom packed up her stuff. I went up to the hostess and told her I am sorry, I know that you just seated us but we will be leaving because my daughter is pitching a fit and I don't want to disturb your other customers. She insisted that we not leave and brought us to another part of the restaurant where there were very few people. My mother forgot something when she was packing up her stuff and I wanted to leave some money on the table for the first waitress since she destroyed that table and I apologized to the people who were seated around us.

So my question to you is, what would you have done? Would you have stayed and waited for the fit to pass or hope it passed or would you have packed her up and leave/move like I did?

My mother said I should have just let her scream and throw things around the room. I mean it was so bad I had to get a toy from under someone elses table!

Opinions please!!

Re: What would you do?

I would have left.

DD is younger then yours, but dh and I have left restaurants a bunch of times because she was cranky, crying, etc.

Usually (if we are together) either dh or I will take her outside and try and calm her but if we can't we leave. Not only are we disturbing others but we are not enjoying ourselves either.

BTW, I know I told you this but I LOVE that beautiful pic!

I think you did the right thing--that is getting up to leave. Your daughter is old enough to that you can't do this (I assume that she is not an infant).

I would think that neither you or your mother would actually enjoy your lunch if you are constantly picking up toys. JMO

I would have done what you did or at least remove her from the table for a while and take her outside to try to get her to calm down a bit. There really isn't much reasoning with them at that age. If she really wouldn't settle down I would have left.

I would have excused myself from the table to bring her outside (if there was no reason for her fit, ie nap time). I would have tried to bring her back in when she was calm. If she continued the fit, I would try one more time before giving in.

Second waitress handled it very well. I wouldn't let her continue to scream around other people.

My daughter is 14 months old. It was just My Mom and I at lunch, I didn't want to leave her alone at the table and like I said disturb everyone else!

Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts-

Anyone else?

Re: What would you do?

I would have done what you did. I wouldn't want to disturb anyone around the table eating. I might have tried to calm her down outside and then bring her back in. If that didn't work, I would have left. Did you stay and eat or did you leave? How frustrating for you and mom.
