Re: Central Air...any idea how much to install?
I just had mine installed a few weeks ago for $6300. I have a ranch but we put a vent in the basement (playroom) also. It depends on the size of your house and the size unit you'll need. I think my house is 1300 sf. This price was by far the CHEAPEST we got. Slomin's wanted $12,000!! They were recommended by a friend. The guy works for a major central air company during the day but does installs on the side with a partner. Very professional!!
My unit is a 13 SEER (3 1/2 ton) and the price was $6700- i just had to check the bill.
I had my guys support all ductwork from the attic's ceiling so I could keep all my attic's floorspace for storage. Works beautifully!

Re: Central Air...any idea how much to install?
Ours was about 7K for a 13 Seer unit. I did get a bit of a discount and paid cash. I think normally it would run about 8K for our sized house. Our house is about 2800 square feet. We got it installed last November and there was a wait of about 4 weeks in november for the contractor we wanted.
The easiest house to install it in is a ranch. If you have a two story then... We had no pre exisiting ductwork and they installed it through the walls (we were gutting a lot of the house so this wasn't an issue). I did not want the ductwork through the closets because I'd lose a lot of space. You need to decide how you want it because some companies won't do it through the walls, they only run the ducts through the closets. The flipside of having the ductwork through the walls is that you now have to fill in the holes with new sheetrock, spackle and paint. So it's that or closet space.

Re: Central Air...any idea how much to install?
I was just quoted $10k for a 13 seer system. I have a 2,500 sq ft raised ranch with no duct work. They are putting the ducts in the attic so I won't lose closet space or need to go in the walls. They said they generally don't do the lower level of a raised ranch b/c it tends to stay cool, but if we wanted to it would be about $5k more and they would go through a closet. We have several friends with no CAC in the lower level and they said it's always cool. So we opted against it. We should be getting it installed in a few weeks. I can't wait!!!

Re: Central Air...any idea how much to install?
We had 2 zones put in...1 for the main floor and basement (duct work was already there) and that was $3700. Then...for our addition (second floor) there was no duct work and we got the second zone that was $8800. So the total for both was $12,500.
ETA: We also financed it and had no payments for 12 months.

Re: Central Air...any idea how much to install?
We had CAC installed on our second floor only with a vent in the stairwell to the living-room. Four vents was $4,000. We just enquired about getting the first floor done and that would be approx. $4,200.
ETA: We had no ductwork previously and have very few and small closets, hence we went with the upstairs only for now.

Re: Central Air...any idea how much to install?
I can get you a # for a quote...it's not conventional CAC like most have...it's high velocity which is great for allergies and it's SUPER quiet. Hospitals and Senior Homes use it. It's called Spacepak (competitor is Unico).
The duct work is about 3 inches in diameter and the unit is so small it can be put in a crawl space or even a closet if need be (if you don't have attic or basement). I believe it takes up the amount of room in a closet as would a few mens suits.

Re: Central Air...any idea how much to install?
I think we paid between $6K-$7K for ours about 2 years ago. I think it is 13 SEER. We used Meenan and were very happy.
We have a high ranch with no duct work.
