What type of Patio should we have Done?

What do you think? We have a big empty space. We were planning on doing a 300 Sq Foot Wood Deck, but my in laws came by last night and said we should have the brick guy come back and do the patio.

We dont know what we should do...

Thanks,
Scott

I prefer decking when it is off the ground, with slabs I think solid surface patios look better & are a better choice. I love pavers, don't know a whole lot a stamped concrete except my DH has taken out patios made of it that cracked & replaced them with pavers or decking over the years. You have a good experience with your paver guy, I'd say stick with that.

Scott, we are using Julz33 guy to do the patio and front walkway w/ stamped concrete. We are getting this same pattern in a gray.

That looks nice - I love the brick too.....I agree the deck will not be like a regular deck since the house is on a slab. It will be a floating deck.....

hmmmm....

the only problem with wood is that you have to treat it constantly or it rots. too high maintenance for me, but I do love how it looks!

I voted for brick pavers

I believe your property taxes go up with a deck and not with a patio. For uniformity's sake, I would probably go with the same brick pavers you did in the front of the house.

Re: What type of Patio should we have Done?

We hate our deck. The carpenter bees are all over the place and are literally ripping it to shreds (yes it is pressure-treated wood). I also don't like being high up - I have no desire to see my neighbors or for them to see me. Also what is most comfortable for your house? You want to walk out the sliders and be on whatever surface you decide -- not have to step up or down if possible.

I don't think a deck makes sense with a Levitt house - my SIL has a patio. That's what I would do.

Pavers or stamped concrete? Pros and cons for each - I understand the concrete can heave and crack, esp. if you have any trees. If you were happy with the paver guy, have him back to give you an estimate... he will surely tell you why to do pavers over stamped concrete!

Re: What type of Patio should we have Done?

we did the stamped cement in the front yard porch.
in the back we have a wood deck, but it is old and splintery. when we re-do the back deck we are going to use the synthetic wood stuff (like trex)

Re: What type of Patio should we have Done?

Pavers are beautiful, but double the price of cement.
Wood requires too much maintenance. But Trex decking (or other composite woods) are a beautiful substitute! Looks just like wood, but no splintering, sanding, staining required. Heard some downsides to Trex, but is anything 100%?

Re: What type of Patio should we have Done?

Composite Decking is very nice, but very expensive too

My neighbor bought all the materials and did the work himself - It costed him $6500 for supplies

I'd use pavers and match what you did on the front walkway.

Re: What type of Patio should we have Done?

do not do wood
it rots
no matter what type of treatment you do on it, it will rot after time.
My dad, who is a woodworker, put his own deck in- it's pretty big, like 700 square feet on two levels. It took a while, but after 14 years it has to be replaced- it's totally rotten.
he decided to go with this synthetic composit deck material- think for the 700 square feet it cost 3k for materials- he just bought it.

The only con with the composite decks - They get REALLY HOT! You can't walk across it with bare feet.

Michelle - that looks amazing!!!

My vote is for pavers. I love decks but the maintenance and the fact that taxes would go up are cons IMO.
