Has anyone insulated their attic?
Dh mentioned last night that he noticed that the insulation in our attic is very thin and old. We are thinking about putting more insulation up there especially since it was cold in the house last winter (our 1st in our home).
Has anyone insulated their attic? Was it blown in or is it layers of the stuff they sell in Home Depot? Was it expensive to do? And, are there any major do's and don'ts?
TIA!
ETA: It seems that some people say you should NOT insulate the attic, is this true? Also, we use the attci for storage and our CAC ducts are there.

i got a estimate for blow in and it was around 4K-5K if we purchased the general roll in HD it would of cost us around $400 if on sale. The blown is better and higher R value but the problem is if you do any gutting of a room it has a tendency to fall down *rain.

We redid the insulation in our attic. Definitely helped with this past cold winter. DH and his friend did it themselves. We also put plywood down on top of the insulation so we can use the attic for storage. If you're going to do that you need to make sure you get the right thickness because if it's too thick it's not going to insulate properly. It was pretty easy. You just need to wear a mask, goggles, hat and long sleeves and pants for the fiberglass. Took DH and his friend about the entire day.

we just had an inpection done on a home we are buying , one of the suggestions was to put new insulation in the attic bc it's really thin right now. so once we buy we will have to do this.

Actually DH just did this yesterday, he took out all the old insulation and put in all new cause ours was very thin as well, he said it must have been original to the house, but said the new insulation would keep in a lot of heat in the winter

DH just did this about 2 months ago. It kept our house cooler this summer as well. He left the old insulation up there, and just put new on top of it so that the rating would be at what the government suggests it should be.
It cost around $350 to do.

We bought our house in 2007 and the flipper had just put in blown in insulation into our attic. The inspector stated this was one of the better ways to insulate the attic and we shouldn't have drafts and we don't.
The CAC installers hated it though when they had to install the duct work up there, but they repaired what they touched, moved etc.
