Ovarian Cyst / BC Pills
I went in for CD 3 testing today at the RE's office, and they found a 6-cm cyst on my left ovary. So instead of giving me Clomid to help me ovulate and get pregnant, the RE prescribed me Birth Control Pills. I joked with her, "that sounds a little counter-productive!" but I was kind of serious. I was so overwhelmed and upset at the appointment (my mother died last year from ovarian cancer that they found when they found a cyst on her ovary like this one) that I didn't ask the right questions. And the Internet is only upsetting me more.
BC pills do not shrink cysts; they only prevent new ones from forming. So do you know why she put me on the pills? To stop new ones from forming and give this one time to shrink? Would it have been dangerous for me to get pregnant with a cyst this large?

i responded on TTC. I am not an expert, but I think they gave you BC pills to adjust your hormones and by doing it, the cyst will "disappear". I think this is how it works. Also I think that cyst might be causing anovulation, so i am hoping once the cyst is gone, you will ovulate on your own. hugs

Re: Ovarian Cyst / BC Pills
I had a 6 cm cyst on my ovary and got lap surgery to get it removed. After that, my ob put me on birth control & it helped a lot. Good luck

Ah yes, I know from Googling (dangerous!) that a cyst greater than 5 cm is surgery territory. Most cysts go away on their own, though, so I have a follow-up appointment in 6 weeks to see if mine gets smaller.
You say that being on birth control "helped a lot" - what did it help with? Not getting any more cysts? Are you prone to them? I don't know what my story is - I was on the Pill from ages 19-31 but I didn't have any cysts before I was 19. I hope this doesn't become a regular thing for me.
Thanks for sharing your experience!

Thanks for the thought, but I've had 50+ day cycles since I was 12 years old. As far as I can tell, I've never regularly ovulated. This cyst is only 4 or 5 weeks old and my cycle before it, in May/June, was 74 days and anovulatory.
I appreciate your kind wishes and "hugs" on both threads, though. Thank you!

Re: Ovarian Cyst / BC Pills
I'm sorry you are going through this I have also had problems with ovarian cysts. This is my understanding, some cysts can form from the follicle not going back into your ovary after you ovulate. Most cysts go away on their own. So, by putting you on BCP it stops any new cysts from forming because you won't ovulate. Most cysts go away on their own, so maybe they are hoping yours will? Again, I am not an expert- this is just my understanding and I may not be right about everything! I hope this works out for you soon.

Re: Ovarian Cyst / BC Pills
If it helps any, I just had a f/u sono today after 3 weeks on BCPS and my 6cm cysts is gone. They are usually just follicles that keep filling with fluid. BCPs shut done the hormones that keep them going and they tend to resolve that way. GL!

Yes, I am very prone to cysts & my OB actually had me wait it out a couple of months b/c like you said, they do go away on their own but this one did not.
Birth control pills helps b/c 1-my period were much lighter. I used to have very heavy thick periods (TMI) 2-I used to get very bad cramps, which my ob said was b/c of the cysts 3-b/c I was on bc, I never got another cysts again.
Now that we are TTC, I am obviously off the pills but my dr did warn me that they can come back at anytime but I am willing to take that chance right now.
