HELP!!!! Would you go to an RE if you were me???

OK... so last November we got pregnant on the HM. January was a mc due to trisomy 21.

We have been trying ever since. I use the CBEFM, opk's and preseed.

For the majority of the time though, it was just the CBEFM. The CBEFM is supposed to give you high readings before your peak (ovulation). I don't get the high readings first, usually it just jumps straight to ovulation status. A friend told me that (she got this info from an RN) could be a problem with a hormone... basically it's jumping super high super fast, rather than being somewhat gradual. She also indicated that if it is a problem with the hormone it could also cause a trisome and there would be problems with the eggs.

So we have tried for 6 cycles after the mc. Though the journey started November of 09.

Should I go to an RE or wait a little while loner? If I wait, how long should I wait?

I'm currently on cd 26ish (awaiting AF or a BFP).

My other issue with going to an RE is time and location. We prefer to go on LI. But I work in the city and I hear that with RE's you might have to go into the dr office each morning before work, etc. and that's just not feasible for me. Not even if it were in the city. My job is not flexible (when it comes to me).

Ahh I just don't know what to do anymore.... and I'm tired of this waiting game. It's all like a sick form of emotional torture!!!

If I were in your situation, I would go straight to a RE. They will be able to pinpoint the reason(s) that you are having a hard time conceiving through various tests. You can be aggressive as you would like to be with treatments, but I would go see a RE just for a diagnosis alone, to better understand your body.

I work in NYC too and my RE appointments never interfered with my job. I went to RSofNY in Mineola and their hours start at 6:30am. I would make very early appointments and hop on the LIRR at Mineola and make it to work on time.

GOOD LUCK!!! Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

I'm sorry about your loss. Just go to an RE for a consult and get some basic tests done. It can't hurt and it will ease your mind and give you more information about what is happening in your body. Hormones wouldn't cause chromosomal abnormalities in your embryos. Hormone imbalances could prevent you from ovulating or prevent your lining from being optimal, and a million other things.

There are lots of old threads where people recommend their REs office. Good luck.

I would go to a RE. Why torture yourself any longer?

Try not to let yourself fall into the trap about location of the doctor. You need to make an appt and get evaluated. Once you know your issues pick your clinic and doctor based on that. Some RE's specialize in certain diagnosis.

You're not looking for a nearby grocery store, this is getting you a baby. It's important to work it out with your schedule. If you have to tell your job that you are taking care of a non-life threatening medical issue and need to make these appts that's all they need to know.

Good luck..

Thank You for this!! My friend told me this and it made me nervous... but at the same time I've learned not to trust everything she says. I usually post it instead and get the LIF opinions!!! Chat Icon

I think your age helps determine when you 'should' go to an RE - however if you've already had a mc and have been trying for 8 months then it can't hurt to at least ask. Have you been going to your regular gyno at all? what do they say?

generally, dr's say to give ttc'ing up to a year before going to an RE if you're under 35 as it typically takes that long for a 'normal' person to get pregnant.

if you're over 35, they give it 6-9 months because of additional problems due to age.

as for location - i also go to RSofNY in mineola for early a.m. appts. I can hop on the LIRR right there or even get back to my regular station before my normal train. Honestly, i'd rather have the RE be near home than near work since you need to go for appts during the weekends as well, and its much more convenient for me than the city.

good luck!

You are so right. The bottom line is... going to an RE is more important than my job. There's no question about it.

I'm 29, I'll be 30 in November. I didn't think to post my age, even with knowing that age has a lot to do with it too.

I agree.. I'd rather have the RE be closer to home as well. I live in Queens, but LI is easier to get to than the city is.

ETA: I don't currently have a reg gyno. And I'm NEVER going back to the dr from when I was pregnant. He NEVER did a single test on me, and I mc'd at 11 weeks. He did the DNC too. After my follow up appt he said "you are fine, you got pregnant and you are under 30 so I have no question about it, you will be back here in no time". His lack of ANY sort of concern was what got me. I don't know how a dr can tell you that you are totally fine just by looking at you and not running a single test. I get that there are lots of mc's that happen but don't run your mouth telling people NOTHING is wrong when you clearly don't know that for sure.

Well I wouldn't say that. Fertility treatments are expensive. You need your job I assume.

Just keep it low key, don't alarm your job with what you are doing. Hopefully it won't be a long drawn out process and you will soon be able to tell them when you are taking maternity leave!

I just wanted to say that location of your doc although important, should not be the defining reason you go to one doc over another. They are all not the same.

Start with your insurance.

I would definately start looking into at least getting some test done. You dont necessarily have to go to an RE.

Ive going to an RE and I have to say im disappointed. My regular endocrinologist went over what the RE has done so far and she was shocked at the limited amount of testing done - thankfully she is running more tests for me.

Even a regular OBgyn or MD can run some basic tests. If you decide to go to an RE - i just suggest learning as much as you can and be your own advocate before you go.

Re: HELP!!!! Would you go to an RE if you were me???

I would definitely go see an RE especially since you've already miscarried. In my case, I definitely feel like I wasted a lot of time and I really wish that I could reverse it. An RE will be the one to investigate what the underlying issues are or aren't, depending on the case. Especially since it looks like you are already way too frustrated with everything I would definitely make an appointment for a consultation. I still haven't gotten pregnant under the care of an RE, but at least I know that I'm a lot closer to it than I was before and I feel a lot less frustrated than I used to. Good Luck to you!

Re: HELP!!!! Would you go to an RE if you were me???

I see from the other thread that you’re already looking for an RE, but I’ll also add my own comments here. Seeing an RE was the best thing I ever did and I kick myself for waiting as long as I did. I mentioned in the other thread about finding a place between home and work for convenience with monitoring. Luckily I only work about 15 minutes from home and my RE is literally right on the way in. If I lived on LI and worked in the city I’d probably opt for a RE on LI because I wouldn’t want to take the train into the city on weekends or days off for monitoring. That’s just my preference though.

Monitoring can easily be done early in the morning before you go to work. Most offices start monitoring at 6:30am. Between bloodwork and sono, I was usually in and out within a half hour at most.

The good news is you got pregnant once before. I’m sorry it ended the way it did, but the RE will definitely help pinpoint any issues and get you pregnant again. Good luck!!
