Cutting an Onion?
After watching Master Chef last week, I realize that i could never be the next amatur chef because I clearly do not know how to cut an onion. Was wondering how many out there slice and dice like a pro, what technique do you use, and where did you learn it?

Re: Cutting an Onion?
I think I'm a pro. Onions should always be cold to cut down on the gas that makes you cry. Cut the onion in half first & then lay the flat half down to avoid it moving. Then the rest is your choice.

Re: Cutting an Onion?
Cold onions work best.
I brunoise my onions, just like on Top Chef/Master Chef/etc.

Re: Cutting an Onion?
I've gotten better since we got a good knife set. I think this is key to slicing/chopping.

I 100000% agree. Brunoise is an incredibly difficult technique (IMO) and it's nearly impossible with a craptastic knife.
ETA: Although I do know and use the 'proper technique'. I am NOT a pro by any means!!! Tons of folks do it way better than I ever could. I was taught when I was a kid by my dad (his father was a chef).

Re: Cutting an Onion?
I brunoise my onions as well.
Although, I'm not as fast as the professionals, but I have a great knife set, so that helps out A LOT.

Re: Cutting an Onion?
i use a slap chop.
seriously though, i know how to cut an onion but i am SO sensitive to it that i need it to be covered so i can see straight.
plus i hate cooking so this makes it go a little faster.

Re: Cutting an Onion?
I use the brunoise method as well but not with perfection.
If you google the phrase, you'll see how it's done. It's actually pretty straightforward.
