Brick fireplaces
The new house has a real brick fireplace...I want to put up a surround..and possibly mount a flat screen on top of it as it's in the den..anyone do this, I know brick is tough to work with and if you have do you have pictures...The brick goes all the way up to the ceiling..I wanted to paint it white but DH is totally opposed to that idea...

We have one too--- and while we are not ready for a new tv yet for this room-- this may be an option for us when we get one. So, let me know what you find out!!
I also wanted to paint it white and everyone told me me no!
I think I am going to paint the mantel, which is a dark wood-- but I just left it as it is for now and will wait to see it with the rest of the room painted and our stuff is in there.

I know everyone is telling me no, meanwhile I'm finding so much online saying you can, bc it's not really exposed to the elements inside the home...we have a new tv in our garage that we plannend on mounting in the house that we're in now but haven't since we're probably moving and don't want to start drilling unnecessary holes in the wall..

I would look on service magic for TV installation, and get a profressional in there to check it out.
YOu may also just wait it out as many of the new cable boxes, etc. are planning to be wireless, etc.

hmmm that's a really good point with the wireless boxes...see this fireplace doesn't even have a mantle so wanted to drill one in or even a surround if possible...

the other thing is that a lot of new TVs are wireless too. We just bought a new vizio which we are not planning on mounting, but we could if we wanted to-- and in our research, we found a lot of the TVs were wireless, even if cable boxes, etc. weren't.

We have one full wall, side to side and floor to ceiling of brick in our living room and I HATE It. We are going to sheet rock the sides and then stone veneer the middle.
As far as the tv above the fireplace. I know I heard some where (not sure if it was on here or it could have been one of those HGTV shows) that you can only mount tv's above gas fireplaces. I would maybe call the tv company and see what they recommend and if the warranty will be voided if you do put it above the fireplace.

DH's cousin Painted her brick fireplace with a white-wash. The red still shows through, it's just lighter. More of a shabby-chic feel... I love it.
I'm not sure exactly what she used or how she achieved the effect, but it looks awesome.
Maybe try asking in a paint store if they can recommend something?
We mounted our TV above our fireplace, but we have sheetrock above our fireplace, so I can't really help... Sorry =(

Our contactor built a frame on the walls to install the sheetrock.

We had this. I have a double sided fireplace that was all brick. they built around it with mdf i think its called? its like thinner plywood kind of material. they added some detailing and put tile around the hearth area. we have our flatscreen mounted to it, and built a cabinet to hold the cable box. the wires now run from the tv behind the wood so you dont see anything. i can fm you a picture if you like.

ours has sheetrock over the brick - we are thinking of putting the tv up but not sure what to do yet b.c of the wires everywhereImage Attachment(s):
