Relocation WWYD?

About 5 years ago, DH and I moved upstate. DH transferred jobs, I got a new job, we built a house and we had our first child. We were living the life we could never afford on LI.

Then, my Mom moved here - she retired and built a townhome. My brother and his family (wife + 3 kids) soon bought a house here and relocated here too. We are about 7 hours from LI.

DH just got a job offer back on LI that would DOUBLE his current salary. His entire family and extended family still live there, as well as my extended family (immediate family is here upstate now and in CT).

We are *somewhat* happy here, but always felt like Long Island was home. But now that my entire family is here, I think they would disown us if we decided to move back to Long Island. However, with this pay increase, we could easily afford to live the life we want on LI... the main reason we left in the first place.

I hate having to make these decisions... WWYD??????? Anyone been through something similar?

I have not been through this but I do believe you have to do what is best for YOUR family. There was no way of knowing that this would happen so its not like your family can say you planned it. Are your family happy living off of LI and do they even speak about moving back?

I would bring the subject up with them and lay it all out like you have here. They would be very selfish if they give you a hard time if they see that this is what you really want - that is if it IS what you really want.

I am/was in a similiar situation. We moved back for the job but I wish we didn't. We were comfortable in our brand new home. Our life was finally falling into place. His old company on Long Island offered him an offer that he couldn't refuse. We are now back on LI and I wish we stayed. If you have your life set and in place up there think about if you want to pick up and move. What about housing here? Can you afford here what you have there?

We are in a similar situation. We live in NC and DH's sister and parents moved here. If we ever wanted to move-they would be really pizzed. That said like AP said-you have to do whats right for YOUR family

I'll be honest, my "home" is where my family (extended too) is. I don't want my DC growing up without being close to my mom or my ILs. They also help us out a great deal w/ DS. So my choice would be to stay where you are (unless it's Buffalo, because I hate Buffalo!).

we are dealing with this currently.

We are in NC, my parents are on staten island.
My youngest brother is off to college, so they are more then ready to leave.

I told them I will love to have them down here, but dh works way too hard to pass up a big offer in the future. that we love where we live, but at this point, he still has to follow the money.
