Cow Harbor 2010
Has anyone registered yet?
I haven't registered yet but really want to run this race this year. I just feel like I will never be ready for this race or the DIVA Half because I can't get my training in due to all this heat!!!
I currently don't have access to a treadmill and a gym memership is just not in the budget right now. I was completely depending on being able to run in themorning before work but even at 6am its already so hot out!!!

Re: Cow Harbor 2010
My friend and I are doing this race, it will be my 2nd time running it. I plan on reg. in August. As for the heat it is a killer but sign up for the race the worse thing that could happen is that you have to walk some of it, the good thing that could happen is it just may make you find that time you need to train for it. GL :)

I plan to do it! I haven't registered yet - want to finish the Summer Run Series and see if I can improve my pace more so I know what time to sign up for.
I love that race. The crowd support is incredible.

Re: Cow Harbor 2010
i'm debating whether or not to sign up. i'm going to be away most of august and will lose a lot of training time so i'm not sure if it's worth it. i don't want to bother if i won't be able to race to my full potential. decisions, decisions...

me!
I'll be volunteering at pick up too.
It will be my last race before my marathon, so I'm hoping for a good run.
On wednesday nights they have run throughs. The first two weeks, the last two pace groups only run 3.5 miles of it, so if you can get to about 3 miles by mid August, you might be in good shape for it.

Where can I get info about the run throughs?
I can already run up to 5 miles but with all this heat I can barely make it to 4 miles.

Re: Cow Harbor 2010
i plan on it-still have to register though. i have been running the route on a weekly basis for my marathon training. such a great course! ETA the heat has been such a PITA with training. i had to go out at 5:30am last saturday for my long run b/c there is NOTHING hate more than running in heat while the sun is beating on me. early mornings and evenings are the only times i till run in the summer. it's not easy but it's a lot better!

Re: Cow Harbor 2010
Meg's link has the info. We meet at the Laural Ave school (there are at least 100 people of all abilities)
the one thing is that there are NO ipods/headphones.
There are two water stops on the way (~2.5 and 4.5) and there is gatorade and water at the end.
they also will bring your keys from the school to main street.

WOW that sucks!!! I have never run with out my iPod before!!! IDK if I would be able to do that!!! Is that a rule for the actual race too? I use the nike+ and I feed off of being able to know my pace. Even with out that idk if I would be able to get through it without some music....

Re: Cow Harbor 2010
it's not a rule for the race, just the run throughs - it's for their insurance. Since it's not a closed course, there are a lot of cars, you have to listen to your group leader about when to cross the street etc, and other group members will be yelling out "car front" or "car back. They don't want to be liable. If you come with headphones, they ask that you run without them. People will say something to you on the course as well.
you can bring just your ipod/nike+ and not hook up with headphones to watch your pace. There are a lot of people around to talk to as well. I'm a huge music while I run fan, but I do cherish these times when I'm forced to be with my own thoughts. I was happy that I did so with these runs, b/c I had to run a marathon without headphones and I guess it prepped me (I still carried my nike+ and had my garmin watch)

Thanks for the info. I like the idea of still using the nike+ without the headphones. Atleast that still gives me something to work with. And I completely understand about the headphones and the liability since the course is still open to traffic. Like you said I will just try and use it as a learning experience.

Re: Cow Harbor 2010
I think the official rules last year said no headphones as well - a lot of races do - but as people were lining up even the race organizers were joking about it.
It's always for safety but there's no way a car can get anywhere near the course on race day so I guess they let it slide!
Now that I run with my dad I actually never use my iPod on the short races (5Ks). I likely will though for Cow Harbor. Need something inspirational and motivational to get me up James Street!

The USATF recently lifted their headphone ban. Enforcement was up to the race director. NRC is pretty easy going and would never enforce it.
but the training runs come in close contact with cars...so definitely no headphones. I guess the people on the route don't all like the run throughs and they are constantly calling the police.

Re: Cow Harbor 2010
Really? That's sad. Part of why I love Cow Harbor is the support from the people who live along the course. Stinks that they would complain about the training runs!

Trust me you will be fine. The only time I use my ipod is when I am forced to go on the treadmill or when I run alone otherwise when I am around others I never use it. I run with a few ladies and i look forward to our twice weekly converstaions epecially on my 10+ runs it helps pass the time. You will get used to it I promise. When I first started running I could never see myself not using my ipod and now I barely use it!
