Smacking....

Just recently when I tell Jared no or try to redirect him elsewhere, he gets frustrated and smacks me. Today, he smacked my face and I almost lost it...lets just say that he sat in his crib for 5 minutes so Mommy could have a time out...

Any BTDT moms have any advice on frustration and slapping???

My son is 2 1/2 and ALWAYS does this when he gets mad. He even hits the dog. He gets alot of time outs and I TRY to be calm but it is hard. It HURTS sometimes.

Re: Smacking....

You tell them no & give them a time out. Patrick used to do it all the time.

Re: Smacking....

In the moment tell him "no" and give him a time out if he needs one. Then at a later time when he is calm have a conversation with him about hitting and explain to him that it is wrong. Try to relate is to something like if he see someone hitting on TV tell him it is wrong. Eventually he will learn the concept although it might take some time.

I agree. Joseph did it a few times. I also think it's great that you took a time out too. I think the best thing you could do is to tell your son you're upset & you are taking the time you need to calm down - then hope he learns to do the same.

Re: Smacking....

Julia is doing this to now, she will smack my hand out of the way if I'm taking to long to cut up her foodChat Icon or she will smack my DH in the face if he goes to kiss her or hit me if she cant have what she wants, I guess its normal, I just say NO in a stern voice and she usually stops.

Nate's doing it also.... I say no sternly, but he just laughs or pouts and starts to cry.

That's how Kevin is too. I mostly say no sternly and tell him do nice and show him how. He hasn't been as bad of late - he is learning not to do it. He mostly now only smacks me when I ask for a kiss....timeouts didn't work. he loves his crib and I tried the couch - which he rolled and laughed at as well

Now he is on to head banging. When he is told no, doesn't get his way, is frustrated, etc. He has one big black and blue forehead....

Re: Smacking....

oh boy - I'm scared now. Is it only a matter of time till Ryan does this? When Ryan gets frustrated he throws himself on the floor and screams. He gets over it pretty quick though. Sometimes I think he just doesn't understand NO. He will be 1 in 2 weeks. Does any one else feel it's hard to communicate to your 1 year old?

Re: Smacking....

Smacker here too...I give her a time out or a stern reprimand that brings her to tears. I don't want to scare her but that's just not acceptable.

Jake has started doing this too. Mostly smacking our hands when we are feeding him -so not funny. He does it more to DH than me though.

Great advice ladies.

I have a question though...if you use the crib for timeout when the baby does something you disapprove of, won't it create a negative association with the crib and then cause bedtime/naptime problems later?

That's what I thought, so we use the playpen we have on the first floor. At his age now, his not going to sit still for anything so I need to have him confined.
