NYS SS Assessment
Did anyone else see that NYS is doing away with the 5th and 8th grade SS assessments?
Considering my students struggle enough as it is (I teach a self-contained class with students with severe L.D), I'm so happy they won't have to deal with the pressure of the test this year!! Especially since they already have to take ELA and Math!

Yes- I teach ELA so I'm not affected. IMO the fewer tests, the better. The testing situation is getting out of control.

I heard from other teachers so I don't know if it is rumor or fact, that because they are doing away with the SS they are adding more questions to the ELA and math tests.

Re: NYS SS Assessment
I teach SS and I disagree with this so much.
As much as I feel that the testing is getting out of control, I feel that it is going to undermine the subject and many teachers will focus less on SS.
I have students (I teach in a MS) that come to me in 7th grade that have no idea that NY is a STATE not a COUNTRY and on a map cant point out where NEW YORK is. That is just sad- they also have little or no knowledge of how our government works. Many cant even tell you who our current President is.
There is an essay on the test and their writing is just terrible. There needs to be some accountability- plus its only 5th and 8th grade. Its not like every grade has it

They have reconfigured the Math and English tests for next year. For English (in 7th and 8th grade at least), there will be more multiple choice, but fewer essays. And the tests seem to be more similar year to year, which makes more sense. My favorite part of the new English test is that the way it's graded is more equal now. Each part is worth about 30% of the grade. The way it was before, the multiple choice was 60% of the grade and that was silly!

when i started teaching (SS) there were no lower tests in SS...I didn't see a difference from the ones who did not take the lower SS tests and the ones who did.

I haven't heard about this....... but it figures that that's the one test they will do away with while I teach 8th grade math, science, and language arts. Social studies is the one subject I don't teach!

Re: NYS SS Assessment
It is def. true. The NY Regents Board approved it because it is not a federally mandated test. However, from what I understand it is all coningent on budget.
