do ask for proof of insurance?
I think you can verify their license with the town in which they are registered with but just because they say "licensed and insured" doesn't mean they actually are right?
Sorry new to this and I don't know if they will look at me like I have 10 heads if I ask that

Absolutley!!!! They should provide you with a certificate of insurance showing their coverage.

From what I understand the town does not issue or update licenses without proof of insurance. If the license is current then they had to have insurance to get it.

While that is true - the insurance can cancel out mid-term and the town might not necessarily know.
I personally would ask for proof of current insurance, that way you get an updated certificate and you know they're covered correctly.

I would def. ask for both. You can call Nassau or Suffolk to find out if they have a license and if they are in good standing with the county.
Suffolk Count of Consumer Affairs is where you want to call
Nassau County of Consumer Affairs
I know on the Suffolk link you can look it up yourself with their license number. But if you call Consumers Affairs dept, they will let you know if there are any complaints against them or not. They will not tell you the complaint, but they will tell you if they are in good standing or not. I have used this before and it saved me from hiring someone that was on the watch list of repeat complaints. HTH! GL!
