Westchester

DH is contemplating a job in White Plains and we think if he takes it, it would make sense to move up to Westchester.

I only really know Scarsdale, Chappaqua, Pelham and Irvington.

What are other good areas? on the Hudson? on the Sound? good school districts, etc.

TIA

Re: Westchester

Hi- Congrats to DH!

There are sooo many terrific towns (think town halls/no strip malls) and schools in Westchester. Rye or Rye Brook (everyone in the town gets a beach pass!), Larchmont/Mamaroneck (beach pass!), Pleasantville and Armonk (terrific schools and LOW LOW taxes, cute towns!) to name a few. Also, Hastings on the Hudson.

I know this is strange too, but if you were looking to go a little further for your taxes- Westport Connecticut has to be the cutest town and the town is very "Hampton-y". Everyone gets a beach pass and schools are terrific. If DH did not work in the city and worked in Westchester, we would live here. Also, Greenwich Connecticut. Expensive but cute town.

I live in Chappaqua. But we looked at ALL these places before we bought and LOVED all the towns. HTH!

eta: check out Harrison too.... schools aren't as terrific as the rest, but the taxes are low!

Thanks M and Gina...just the information I was looking for.

Westport sounds like a great option too. How far a drive from White Plains is it?

Re: Westchester

My father's job was transferred from Manhattan to White Plains when I was probably two or three. He car pooled to White Plains with a two other people, one from East Meadow, and the other from Valley Stream. Then he was transferred to CT. We moved and about three years up there he was transferred back to White Plains. By that time Westchester was insane $$. Ended up coming back to Long Island.

I worked in Valhalla for a short time (north of White Plains, next to Pleasantville, Thornwood, & Chappaqua). . I thought those were all nice area. My father lived in Scarsdale before he married my mother and he loved it. At least White Plains is like a 30-35 minute train ride to the city and not a bad ride to LI. If DH and I were going to move to Westchester I probably wouldn't go more north than Chappaqua but that is just me.

What do you cinsider low taxes we have friends in Armonk and the taxes are outrageous the only way the taxes could be low is if you have lived there forever or have a very old home in not great condition

Believe it or not- Relative to the rest of Weschester, trust me the taxes are lower. Armonk is subsidized by many of the businesses there-IBM namely....If you have one of those crazy large houses there, yeah- your taxes will be a lot but again, less than a lot of Westchester. Basically, if your friends' house was in another town they would be paying a lot more. Westchester is crazy $$!!!

eta: I guess I should have said lower taxes, not Low. LOL!Chat Icon Chat Icon

Westport is great, but is $$$. If you want to buy a house, you'd be lucky to find something under $600,000 in Westport (Greenwich is more expensive). Also, the commute to White Plains would be bad. I-95S is awful during rush hour. I wouldn't be surprised if it took at least 1 hour to get to White Plains from Westport. Good luck with your search.

We live in Brewster and DH commutes to Purchase (very close to White Plains). It's about a half hour to WP from here, down 684. Traffic on 684 usually moves pretty well, even at rush hour (compared to other roads).

Housing here is less than Westchester too, a little more affordable. For us, the taxes in Westchester were almost as much of a deterrant as the general cost of real estate.

We also like Danbury, CT very much.

Re: Westchester

You may also want to consider So Dutchess Cty. I live in Dutchess now and LOVE it! Most of my neigbors work in WP which 40 mins away.
There are many new developments with BRAND NEW homes, excellent schools and lots of open space. It may be something to look into.

If you are interested do a search for Toll Brothers builders or "The Legends" in Hopewell Junction.

Re: Westchester

we are in Monroe, Orange County. We love it! We are 5 minutes from Woodbury Commons in Harriman. The commute to white plains would be 40-45 minutes from here by car.

I would look in Putnam county as well the homes might be cheaper than Westchester and the taxes are low as well.

Good Luck!

I am moving to Mahopac (border of Westchester and Putnam) from Millwood in a few weeks. The schools are excellent - depending where in Mahopac you live its about 1/2 hour - 40 minutes to White Plains.

Most houses in Southern Westchester are very expensive - we had to move a little further north to afford anything nice. Not sure what your budget is or what size you are looking for, but we just went through it. Feel free to FM if you have any specific questions.
