WWYD- kitchen remodel
I am sick and tired of my laminate countertop.
The kichen cabinets are blue and the laminate is a "multi" beigy thing. The backsplash is make of the same laminate. With wiring showing on top of the backsplash. The previous I am sure did that kitchen himself. It's not finished. Trims are not there, etc... The backsplash is a panel sticking out of the wall and the last 4-5 inches on top below the cabinet is the actual wall of the kitchen with all the wire going in that section. No comment on workmanship.
I was thinking about painting my cabinets white and maybe just invest in a granite countertop. Just to spruce it up.
A kitchen remodel is NOT a priority although I would love to. We have roof, siding and windows to come first.
WWYD? Wait and put up wiht a countertop that is NOT inspiring for cooking or do a "temporary" remodel with a "face lift" including a new granite countertop?
I am wondering if I am just wasting money since eventually I would redo the kitchen in the next 5-6 years.

Re: WWYD- kitchen remodel
I would paint the cabinets and then put in a formica counter top that you like. I wouldn't spend the money on granite only for you to rip it out a few years down the road.
Without seeing what your kitchen looks like I would paint the cabinets white, do a basic white subway tile and then pick a neutral counter. That all would probably cost less than the granite.

Re: WWYD- kitchen remodel
As someone who wanted to "just replace" a bathroom vanity, then maybe a tub or a toilet-- a contractor told me yesterday I am better off waiting til I can do the whole thing, so I don't end up wasting money now doing it piecemeal and trying to make something I want to change in the future fit with something I get now. So-- I'll give you the same advice since I think that makes sense.

Re: WWYD- kitchen remodel
I would not spend the money on granite or any other high end items at this point. I would want to spend the minimul amount of time and $$ to transform the kitchen into a comfortable functional space.
I would paint the cabinets and maybe change the hardeware and add a new laminate counter top. Depending on your layout and the condition of the wall behind the current back splash I would probably just paint and only do a backsplash behind the sink and stove top.

Re: WWYD- kitchen remodel
I'm sort of in the same boat. we are painting the cabinets white and buying from IKEA butcher block counter tops. I refuse to spend $ on granite now because I know one day down the road I will re-do the kitchen and I don't want to toss the granite if I don't keep the layout. the butcher block is cheap but looks a lot nicer then the famica IMO
I also changed all the hardware already. that alone made such a difference

Re: WWYD- kitchen remodel
paint cabinets white, new laminate counters & new handles/pulls. Or to keep it even cheaper just paint cabinets & buy new handles/pulls. Not worth the money to get the granite if you are ripping everything out in 5-6 years. GL!
