Melatonin...good or bad?

Anyone have exp. with taking Melatonin? Dr. B suggested it for my egg quality but most of the research I have found argues against it...that is negatively impacts ovulation/fertility. Wondering if any other RE's have used it or if they have advised against it. Any feedback appreciated! Tx! Feel free to FM me if you like.

Ive only ever heard of melatonin bein used for people who have trouble sleeping.

I took it a few times when I was having some insomnia and it helped me fall asleep right away.

That's the labeled use but according to Dr. B there were studies where the follicles of good quality eggs had higher levels of Melatonin in them, causing the thought process that Melatonin can help improve egg quality. I just wonder if that is a naturally occurring event though and taking it as a supplement won't do any good and possibly do harm.

When people say "Studies show", it makes me pause. What studies? Where and how accurate were the results, who were the subjects, how long was the experiment, so MANY variables .. I can go on and ON.

Some studies show accupunture to be helpful, some studies, say nay, I can find studies that say stress does NOT have an impact in conceiving, other studies disagree. Eat watermelon to help fertilization, don't eat any sugar, one doctor says clomid, another says femara, ICSI gives the embryo a greater chance of abnormalities, etc etc Again, I can go on and on. Someone can always find a "study" that agrees with their protocol.

Unfortunately, there is so much conflicting information out there regarding infertility.Chat Icon

So to answer your question, no I have never heard of melatonin promoting egg quality. Like the above poster said, I have used it for sleep. I would ask Dr. B more about it, google it, etc. The one thing I have learned in the past 2 years, is researching and being your OWN advocate is so imporant. GOOD LUCK and let us know what you have found.Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Yes, I do do my own research (as stated in a previous response) which is why I am asking real people if they have any first hand experience. Believe me, after 4+ years at this I trust NO ONE DOCTOR or STUDY! Chat Icon
