Buying groceries/sales
As I sit here looking through the circulars for the week, I realize I have no idea what is a "good" price for a lot of things
I am an impulsive shopper and just buy what I want/like and if it has a sale sign I assume it is a good buy (which I know isn't true!!)
So.......I am looking for some guidance!! Help me spend less on food shopping. What are some good prices for meats, produce and some pantry staples? Money is tight for us lately with 3 little ones, so I am trying to cut my food budget. Thanks

Re: Buying groceries/sales
there was recently a thread on this..
here's a link
but I'll copy/paste my info:
his weekend, chicken thighs, drumsticks, and bone-in breasts were on sale at our supermarket - $.99/lb that's the best price I've seen!
I've seen whole chickens on sale for that price too which is good and same as the Costco price.
Ground sirloin or chuck was $1.99/lb which I think is good too.
For ground chicken/turkey... sometimes it will be $1.99/lb or buy one get one free for $4.99 (Jennie-O brand... which is 1.25 lbs)
For Italian sausage... $3.49/lb - although sometimes you can get "manager's special" for $1.99.
This week there was also pork spareribs for $1.99/lb
(I'm in California though, so this is all at Ralphs)

Also make sure you make a list and use coupons. I get them from the paper and from www.coupons.com
Between weekly sales & coupons I once saved $70.00 on a shopping trip.

Re: Buying groceries/sales
If you have the time, make a note of the regular price of items that you buy all the time. If you visit more than one supermarket, do the same then compare the prices. This way when you see a sale, you know if it is a really good buy. I usually shop Waldbaums - that's more convenient than driving into the next town to the other Supermarket. I've learned how the prices rotate : one week Tropicana OJ is on sale, the next week it is Tree Ripe, the next week it's another brand. Same thing with yogurt, eggs, ice cream, frozen foods, etc. I like certain brands, so I'll keep my eyes open. There are things I won't buy at BJ's because I can do better "on sale" at Waldbaums. I'll buy Perdue chicken, cleaning stuff, garbage bags. Never paper products. I buy meats at a local large butcher shop and stock up - portion then freeze. I fill in the gaps at Waldbaum's.
The best way for me to save money is to leave DH at home. When he shops with me, my bill is twice as high and my cart filled with too much junk.

A note about the buy one get one at Waldbaums. Please note that nine of ten times the price for the meat per pound is doubled so you really are just buying two packs for regular prices. We wanted the beef and realized the price was doubled what it was the week before. Make sure you know the price of these items to determine if the BOGO is really a good deal.

Re: Buying groceries/sales
The best thing to do is make a chart. On the side list of items you want to buy (brand names and size ) and then list the store names on top. Add in the prices each week for about 1 month. This will help you see what goes on sale, how often and at what price. After you do this, you will know what is considered a "good price." If you really want to save after that, start clipping coupons. Coupons + Sales= Major savings. If you want help with specific items, I'd be happy help. I love looking for bargains!

I have a 3 yr old and 6 mth twins....no time for lists!!! Though in a past life, I was a huge list maker and would love that idea!!!! I think I am going to start jotting things down though to get a better idea of whats a good sale. My "staples" tend to be: chicken cutlets bone-in chicken breasts chopmeat some kind of steak canned tomatoes frozen veggies fruit cups TONS of baby food chicken stock and fresh fruit and veggies
then i buy random things for different recipes, but i have most of those random type things in the pantry already

Re: Buying groceries/sales
Coupons are your best friends, esp. at places like Stop and Shop where they double them. There are also blogs that list coupons along with sales so you get the most bang for your buck. Coupons.com and smartsource have printable coupons too.

Re: Buying groceries/sales
I find that meat tends to be cheaper at my grocery store in the summertime. However, during the other times of the year, I will use the butcher's counter at my local Italian market because it's a better deal.
I also sometimes shop at odd hours because I have found that they discount meat at the end of the day at Stop & Shop.
Stop & Shop also always has canned goods like sauce on sale often for $3/1.
