Cake walk... what's my best bet?
I work in a really low-income school (90% poverty, everyone gets free lunch, etc) about 10 miles from Mexico.
Every year they have a "family fiesta"
To contribute, I'm going to be working a booth at the fiesta (ring toss), gathering items for a "Coffee" themed basket and bringing cake/cupcakes/brownies/etc for the Cake Walk.
I need ideas for a Coffee themed gift basket (will be raffled off).. but nothing too expensive!
I also need to know what my best bet is for cake, cookies, cupcakes or brownies for the Cake Walk. Homemade? Store bought? I want to get the most for my money... KWIM? Keep in mind that if I do something homemade, I'll need to have something to bring it in/on. What would you get/make? How much would you spend? Where would you get it?

Re: Cake walk... what's my best bet?
I'd do expresso flavored cupcakes with a mocha or cappuccino cream frosting. Yum.
As for the gift basket.. I would do a Bialatti Moka Stovetop Expresso maker, a coffee bean grinder, some different whole bean coffees, chocolate covered expresso beans and maybe some scrolls... recipe for coffee brownies, mocha cake, and maybe a how-to on how to make a perfect cappuccino, perfect expresso, perfect latte, etc..

Re: Cake walk... what's my best bet?
If I had ALL in the ingredients on hand, I'd do homemade cupcakes/frosting, brownies and cookies. If I didn't I'd do box and buy at like Walmart or Target, or a supermarket if they have the 10 for $10 deals.
Fudgy brownies are always hits.
For cupcakes, if I was doing boxed, I do the soda cupcakes where you combine the mix with a flavored soda of your choice (cherry coke w/devils food, sprite w/white, etc) because they're so easy.
For cookies I'd do a big batch of my regular dough, divide it, and add all different toppings like rainbow chips, butterscotch chips, toffee, walnuts, etc. Snickerdoodles, peanut butter blossoms and sugar cookies are also super easy. Just stay away from the slice and bake dough, its way too spendy and I don't care for the ingredients they use.

The only reason I didn't want to do a coffee kind of cupcake is because I want it to be appealing to kids... and I don't think that would win them over! KWIM?
The gift basket ideas sound AWESOME though!
THANK YOU!

LOVE the cookie idea. That sounds economical... just one dough, various mix-ins. How would you package it?

Re: Cake walk... what's my best bet?
Loaf cakes are usually a good bet, can sell them whole, half or by the slice. - chocolate chip poundcake - marble poundcake - blueberry bread - banana bread
When I donate the cakes, I usually put them on a paper doily, bring it up the sides, then wrap in plastic wrap. Easy to transport, easy to see, and looks a little nicer because of the doily.
Coffee themed basket ..... how about adding plastic spoons dipped in chocolate (to stir the coffee with), a couple of rock candy sticks.

See.. I misunderstood! I thought the cake had to fit the coffee theme and that it was for purchase by the adults! Duh. I will say that my weird kids actually looove mocha cake. But.. they are freaks.
I'd still do cupcakes though. Cupcakes are the most awesome creations in the universe. Bite sized pieces of heaven. And you can fill some of them with cream.. or raspberry filling. Delicious.
I also love Heather's idea for different cookies - you can get cello party bags at the dollar store and stick 3 in a bag and tie it with red, green and yellow ribbons!

That was exactly the idea I was thinking for packaging!

They want them packaged by the dozen though!

The cello bags can likely hold a dozen or more cookies in a stack. I just bought some for Robbie's goodie bags and each held a pair of googly eye glasses, a light up catch game, a slinky, a puzzle, pop rocks, snickers, a peanut butter cup and a pack of Fruit Stripe Gum!

I agree...Or maybe hit the dollar stores and see if they have cheap plastic storage containers that you could wrap a ribbon w/a tag around.
