Uncomfortable
Sometimes being around extended family - I get that they feel like they need to say something, be encouraging, sound like they're supportive...but it just makes me uncomfortable. Which in turn sometimes makes THEM uncomfortable.
Family members are starting to talk to me about the divorce. Great! Ask me your questions, I'm cool with it.
But at the last family gathering a cousin said, "You know, you're young and you're pretty - you have time to meet someone else and settle down and have babies."
I didn't hide my horror very well. Neither did she when I said emphatically, "I don't want that. I don't want to settle down ever again and I don't want babies. I don't even want to be pregnant."
"But you could change your mind." [I know how much some of you love that line!]
"Probably not. It's none of your business either way."
Just when I think we've both reached the height of discomfort, we switch topics and include a pregnant family member, another cousin, in our conversation. They ask me about what I'd been up to lately and I talk about writing and dance and my life. The subject changes over to pregnancy (a relief because I don't want to talk about myself anymore) and it's all good till my cousin says to me, "A baby belly is hard you know."
"My abs are hard too."
And finally FINALLY no one dares to mention husbands and babies for the rest of the afternoon.
I am very happy for people who are happy in their marriages and with their children. And I know that it's not the norm to NOT want that. But what it takes to make people stop talking about kills me.
I'm not angry about the exchange - it just was so d r a g g e d out. I hope that I don't have to have a talk like this again with anyone anytime soon.

Re: Uncomfortable
ugh I can just imagine that conversation. So sorry, people just feel that the baby way is the right way. I've come to accept that people just don't get it and I move on, otherwise there'd be lotsa folks out there with a bananna smashed into their mouth.
I'm pretty sure they all got the picture, and they will spread the word, so most likely there won't be any more of those convos. Good job!!!

PIMP!!!!!!!
In all seriousness, I totally understand the awkwardness of those family conversations.... I hate it! The "when are you having babies?" UGHHH and their horror at my disinterest. Makes me want to punch someone!

People can suck. I will never understand why people just don't drop the conversation once they step in it.

Yep. I prefer not to answer, just stare and then walk away. Makes the blabbermouths feel just as uncomfortable as they have just made me feel.

OMG, can you imagine the family gossip on that? "I can't believe so and so doesn't have kids yet" "I don't think that's gonna happen. Last family party she mentioned that she only takes in the pooper"

Re: Uncomfortable
I think you handled things well. Why can't people just accept other peoples decisions and accept that you aren't going to change your mind?
I like the anal comment!!!!!
