Shopping for Fish
DH & I want to make a fish recipe that we made on our honeymoon at a cooking class. We used grouper there but were told to use either tilapia or another white fish home. The thing is neither DH or I have ever cooked or even bought fish before Any tips on what to look for in the supermarket?

Re: Shopping for Fish
I'd actually go to a fish market instead! They'll help you pick the best/freshest fish...
ETA: Not sure where you live, but we used to go to Molly's in Long Beach for ours.

Re: Shopping for Fish
Where are you? We can suggest a good place to go to!
In Lindenhurst there is the Southside fish market on Montauk Highway.
My dad goes to the little market on Old Country Road in Plainview. I think it is called Johns?
I've bought from Best Yet and been really happy with their selection.

Re: Shopping for Fish
I like the fish at Fairway. The fish monger there will skin it, de bone it and make it idiot proof.
They have really good stuff too.

Re: Shopping for Fish
Thanks for the tips. I live in Suffolk, there's Best Yet up the road from my house I was thinking of going there. How much do I need for two people? Does it goes by weight or pieces?

Re: Shopping for Fish
You can also go to the new Southside in Commack or Whole Foods (although that is expensive).
In a pinch I've bought at the supermarket but never buy previously frozen fish, ask the guy what is fresh and buy that!
I always look at the fish and say "give me that whole peice" or "two of those" rather than order by the pound b/c I just don't know...
although, figure, you know what a pound of cold cuts looks like so maybe 1/2 - 3/4 of a lb of fish would be good for a dinner.

Re: Shopping for Fish
For DH and I we usually get 1 1/4 of fish.
About 8-10 pz per person depending on the fish.

If you are by the Best Yet in Oakdale or West Islip - I'd make a short trip to Islip and visit Dean's Fish Market or White Cap. Sayville Fish Market on Main is also pretty decent.
Best Yet isn't terrible.. but Roger Dean's is superior.
Also - I usually buy a fish that is in tact - it's generally fresher. If you don't know how to filet them, buy the whole fish and ask them to gut and filet it for you.

Re: Shopping for Fish
We made the fish tonight actually, I'm not really a fish person and the smell made me sick, DH took one bite and tossed it and I couldn't even taste it. It looked really good, we used a recipe from our honeymoon that was awesome tasting......which was the last time I actually ate fish (over a year ago). Oh well....back to chicken and beef!
