BTDT Moms...Would you???
Have 4 people over for an outdoor BBQ for memorial day? My DD will be 2.5 weeks old and she will be getting her shots next week.
DH & I have friends who live 5 minutes away and they want to see the baby. Dh invited them for a BBQ Sunday. They have a 6yr old and a 5yr old. I called the pediatrician and he said it would be OK, especially if we will be out side most of the day. Just keep the kids away from her most of the time.
OK, I am a neurotic new mommy. What would you do? I am so torn because I want to see them, but what if their kids have sniffles or something and Gracie get s sick from it? I don't think they would come if their kids are sick, but I am still a little afraid. DH thinks I am nuts. Am I being neurotic? What would you do?

I would definitely have them over. Most moms and dads are reasonable enough to know to keep small children away from babies. And if they're not, it's your right to tell them to politely "Back off!"

Re: BTDT Moms...Would you???
I wouldn't. Besides immediate family I didn't have anyone around DS until after his 6 week checkup.
You won't know what, if anything, those two kids have been exposed to and at such a young age I wouldn't risk it...

Re: BTDT Moms...Would you???
I would have them over but no touching the baby. Generally moms are reasonable enough to keep their kids away from a new baby, it's not always the case. There are those moms with kids that "want to hold the baby", "kiss the baby", etc. Some moms aren't good at saying no. Dont be this mom.
I wouldn't let them NO MATTER WHAT! At 2 weeks old, Maddie was in the hospital getting a spinal tap. We had to stay in the hospital for 4 days. She got cox sackie. In all fairness that was from her brother & it was pretty unavoidable since we had no idea he was sick when we brought her home.

Personally, I wouldn't do it. But you CAN do it if you keep the young kids away from baby. Very far away. I am not a neurotic mommy about alot of things, but this was one area where I was.
Like what happened to Barbara's daughter ( ) - if the baby gets a fever before 8 weeks - it means a spinal tap and a 3 day stay in the NICU. Not worth it, IMO.

OMG, Barb! I am so sorry Maddie had this. I just called my friend and explained to her what my concerns were. She said she would not let them touch the baby and that she understood. Plus, they will only be here for a few hours. If worst comes to worst I will put DD in her crib for a nap soon after they get here.
So, if the kids do try to touch my DD, what can I say to her? I don't want to be rude, yet I want to get my point across.

I would.. Besides, it'll be at your house, and the baby will most likely be sleeping most of the time. Just be prepared to tell the kiddies to back away from the baby, should you need to.

"No, I'm sorry. She's too little. When she gets a little bigger, you can touch her."
My nieces were allowed to touch Joseph's feet only (since he would occasionally get his hand in his mouth). No one was allowed to touch Maddie for a long time after the hospital stay.
Also - DH thought I was nuts too until we were in the ER with Maddie. Then he cried outside of the curtain while they were doing the tap.

OMG how awful. I am so afraid of this with Katie. I dont let any kids hold her and I make sure everyone washes their hands before they touch her.
Poor Maddie, how awful!

I would. Its so easy at this age to keep the kids away from the baby. Just make everyone wash their hands. Enjoy!!

I have to say the only time she cried was when I had to hold her down so she didn't move. When they did the actual tap, she didn't say a peep. In the end, they screwed up the tap way too many times - so I told them they had their last chance. I was really angry at the staff (they said they needed a smaller needle to avoid getting blood in the sample). I'm still not over it.

Re: BTDT Moms...Would you???
Ask the kids to wash their hands..which you can make fun for them. I would let them "look but not touch". I am SURE the parents would understand totally. Shots won't really matter right now since I would hope your friend's kids don't have a true disease.

Re: BTDT Moms...Would you???
We learned the hard way. We let our 4 year old nephew hold sydney when she was a week and a half old and at two weeks she had to be in the picu for four days. Kids can be walking petri dishes! If you have people over just be really careful.

Re: BTDT Moms...Would you???
I would just make sure the kiddies don't touch the baby anywhere except the feet. You can also put the netting over the bassinet or where ever the baby is sleeping or gonna be in while the company is there so the kiddies can't touch her. My cousin came to my house with her 3 year old daughter and her daughter just wantedto look at the baby and when she went to touch the baby beforeI could say anything her mother told her to only touch the feet and she listened.
