Re: Mommies who had C sections and breastfed
I had a c-section and I had no problems BF'ing. Well, I had a little trouble with one side because of his size (too big), but not because of that. The only thing I couldn't use, it was soooo uncomfortable was the Boppy pillow. It was better just holding the baby in your arms or use your own pillow. The Boppy pillow hurt a lot since it's against the incision in a way.

mY ONly issue was placement of baby since the last thing I wanted was anyone on my scar. I brought a nice pillow from home to rest across my belly so I could feed. also I perfected the football hold for feeding in the beginning.

I could have wrote this! I am currently BF'ing and had a c-section two weeks ago. I can't use the Boppy because it rests on the incision, but DH uses it to feed her when I pump.
Here are a few tips: When you are in the hospital, tell ANYONE who will listen that you want to exclusively BF (on demand feeding) and that you want to see a LC immediately. Then when they bring the baby to you press the button for the nurse the first two-three days each time you BF. All of my nurses helped so much because the there was only two LC's for the entire floor and they were they from 9-1PM Mon-Fri only. I did not care what they thought of me, I wanted as much help as possible. Sometimes the nurses told me to wait 5 or 10 minutes and I would wait for them to feed DD. I just gave her a pacifier while we waited. The first night after the c-section I had the nursery give her 1oz. (ONLY) of formula at 1AM, because I was in so much pain and needed to sleep that night. That was the only time I did that and DD was fine with BF'ing.
Good Luck and utilize ALL of the services/people that the hospital has to offer. Don't feel weird about asking for help BF'ing, that is what they are there for.

Re: Mommies who had C sections and breastfed
I had a c/s with my first and an great experience BF him. I did not use a boppy at all, it doesn't really sit comfortable anyway with the incision. What helped a great deal was using the football hold, where the baby is back and under your arm at the side. The LC showed me this after I was struggling at first, and then it went well from there!

I agree the football hold is the way to go

Re: Mommies who had C sections and breastfed
I didnt have any problems. Mine was an emergency c/s. My milk came in within a few days of having the baby and I was producing plenty of milk for her. Only reason I had to stop was because the baby was having trouble digesting my milk....and if you've read my posts you'll see she has had a ton of trouble digesting most formulas too so it really has nothing to do with the c/s. You should be fine!

Re: Mommies who had C sections and breastfed
Call the LC beforehand and talk to her. Make sure your c/s is NOT scheduled on a day that no LCs are there such as a holiday or perhaps a weekend. Bring your copy of A Nursing Mother's Companion Guide. Make a sign for the bassinet that states in large bold letters I AM BREASTFEED. NO FORMULA. and put it in her/his bassinet asap. Tell the nurses in the OR that you are bfing the baby and that you refuse any formula without your consent. Tell the ped that is there to help with the baby the same thing.

Re: Mommies who had C sections and breastfed
I had a C-Section & BF w/ no problem. I actually found the Boppy to be really helpful. If I was ever uncomfortable in the incision area, I just put her in the football hold.

Re: Mommies who had C sections and breastfed
I also had a c-section and had no problems bfing. At first, the boppy was a little uncomfortable, but I still found it easier to feed him using it than not using it. I also used the football hold A LOT in the beginning.

Re: Mommies who had C sections and breastfed
I just remembered that I also used the football hold in the beginning for BF'ing! It's amazing what you forget after a couple of years! The only thing is that I only did it on a specific side? It was too awkward for the other side?
