less than 2 weeks! LIHM

Are we ready? How are our goals looking?

I have three goals A, B, C

A the pace I've been training now (haven't been able to keep up with my longer pace runs, but am hoping adrenaline might make up for a little)

B breaks into a new 10 minute group

C to beat my time from last year

Re: less than 2 weeks! LIHM

I'm so upset right now. After I did a 10 mile run last week I had a really bad pain on the side of my shin. I've been resting it all week and just tried to go out for a short run a few minutes ago. Within a minute the pain came back and I stopped and now my leg is throbbing! I went to a doctor last week and he didn't see anything on the x-ray. He said I could still run, didn't even tell me to rest it but i did anyway. I'm so frustrated right now!! I'm going to get a second opinion in a little bit. I just want to do the half, I don't care if I have to do it on one leg!!! Chat Icon

Re: less than 2 weeks! LIHM

So sorry to hear that Jean let me know what happens!

My only goal is to finish and not put too much pressure on myself. I just want to go and enjoy the run since it is my first half. I am so excited. I did 12 on Saturday and it took me 2:05. I am really not too concerned with my time cause like I said it's my first half but I would like to do it in a decent time!

Thats great that you got to do 12!! That's a great time too!

I went to the doctor in Long Beach today and he made me feel a lot better. He pressed right on the spot that hurt and said that it was common for runners that are new to that much mileage. He told me to take it easy and do some light training on a treadmill and then do the half. After that he said I should take about 4 weeks off.
My goal is to just finish at this point!

Awww I hope you feel better. You still have enough time to rest it. You will do fine that day anyhow! Did he give you anything for the pain and is there a name for what you have?

Jean - I'm so sorry about your shin, but glad the Dr said it's OK for the half. Did he say what it was? shin splints?

Rose - that's a great time for a long run! I'm going to predict under 2 hours for you!

I'm doing a half in NJ on 5/16 and getting excited! Can't wait to hear how all of you do on the 2nd! My goal for myself is just TO FINISH! Chat Icon although I'd really love to beat my time from the last half I did (7 years ago Chat Icon) I actually feel like I'm better prepared this time around. I've done up to 9 miles so far and it wasn't bad at all.

Jean-hope with some rest you feel better by race day. I was recently having hip flexor pain and I rested/cross-trained and in less than 2 weeks I was back up and running with no pain. Do you have a foam roller or The Stick? Those 2 things have really helped me a lot.

Re: less than 2 weeks! LIHM

i don't think there was a specific name for it. He said that its where the calf muscle is attached to the bone (in the back of the leg). thats where the problem is. He said that its common for new runners to experience this. Basically there are 3 major things that cause this and I did all 3!

1-increased mileage
2-way overdue for new sneakers
3-transition from treadmill to a harder surface

I'm resting all this week and hopefully i can get a few miles in next week before the half! Good luck to everyone!

Re: less than 2 weeks! LIHM

Originally my goal was to finish under 2:15 but with all my foot problems lately my training has taken a big hit, so I'll be happy no matter how long it takes me, as long as I finish.

Re: less than 2 weeks! LIHM

Well, I really have no clue how I'm gonna do on Sunday! I haven't run in 3 weeks and my longest run was 10 miles. My leg feels a little better. I tried running a bit this morning on the treadmill but I could feel the pain pretty much right away (although not as bad as it was) so I stopped and did the elliptical. I think I'll be able to make it through the whole race, I'm just hoping the pain goes numb at some point! And of course its gonna be the warmest day of the year so far! It stinks cuz i was looking forward to enjoying the race and now I just want to get it over with (and hopefully not be too injured in the end). Good luck to everyone!!

Good Luck Everyone...YOU WILL DO GREAT!!!

Remember, you have all done amazing and have already accomplished the biggest part of the race...the training...with running all those miles every week. The race is simply your victory lap! So enjoy every minute of your last lap and no matter what the clock says when you cross that finish line you are all successful half marathoners in my book Chat Icon

Jean so sorry you are still in pain. I feel so bad. My foot acted up the other day but now it is feeling a bit better. I am sure you will be fine. I am not the least bit excited about the weather. I do not do well in the heat at all. I was hoping for 50 degree weather day. Yuck!
