Free Mulch?

Has anyone taken advantage of the free mulch some towns hand out? We're thinking of doing it for our play area in our yard (far from our house). I know its probably not cedar. DH is against the idea b/c of the diseased trees & the bugs the non-cedar trees attract.

Also does anyone know who gives them away? We're in town of Babylon

I was always wary of that because what if the tree had like bugs or some other kind of yuckness.

Been using it for years with no problems. And we use A LOT of it!

We use the Town of Smithtown for our mulch which isn't much use to you. Try calling the Dept of Environmental Control and ask if they offer free mulch to town residents. Smithtown has it set up so you can either get pre-made bags (if available), bag your own or have it dumped into your flatbed/trailer.

Thanks. (I THINK our town hands it out too, gotta check. Hubby was just hesitant).

I am not sure if my town has this, but I know my ILs have taken advantage of it for many, many years.

Out of curiosity, does your husband plan on buying the bags of cedar mulch? Or has he found some place that actually sells "cedar mulch" by the yard?

DH said no one around here sells it by the yard. We're probably buying bags.

Re: Free Mulch?

I've been going to the Town of Islip for several years for my mulch and compost. Now that it's getting warm again, I'll be going back soon. Chat Icon

Re: Free Mulch?

Not sure about the mulch but we get our compost at the sanitation dept across from the Ronkokoma Station. You can also get compost from the Holtsville Ecology Site. The best back is to go with a truck or large SUV. DH went with his Mitsubishi Eclipse and brought back bags, but it didn't cover much.
