Trains in Italy
Those who have been...did you take 1st class or 2nd class and what was the difference?
We have 3 train rides, all are express trains (no regional trains) and are supposed to be pretty new and nice. I have heard 2nd class is ok but just want to double check...thx!

Re: Trains in Italy
We always try to go 1st class. Not sure about the new trains but in the past, first class had air conditioning and cushiony seats. Second class didn't always have a/c and the seats were not as nice. Still comfortable though. The big deal for us was the a/c.

Re: Trains in Italy
There is not much difference between 1st or 2nd class, except the price in tickets.

Re: Trains in Italy
We did it through the TA when we went and she recommended 1st class. Never been in 2nd so have nothing to compare to, but 1st was nice.

Re: Trains in Italy
We take first class when we do overnight trains because we want our own bathrooms.
For shorter trips, you should be okay with 2nd class.
I will warn you, we bought our tickets from Rome to Florence when we were in Rome, and didn't realize that we didn't have a seat until we got on the train. It was an unreserved ticket and had to stand the whole time. Ouch. They were second class.

Re: Trains in Italy
Our TA booked the trains and we did 1st class so I have nothing to compare it to. I didn't think the tickets were that unreasonable.

Re: Trains in Italy
i'm pretty sure our travel agent booked us 1st class, but i don't have anything to compare it too. the train was very nice!
and make sure you book not just the train tickets, but the exact time of the train and seats before you get there! otherwise you will have to wait online in the train stations in the city!

Re: Trains in Italy
we did second class and it was very nice! AC, fold out tables at each seat with outlets, nice big windows, comfy seats
what was kind of interesting was that 2 seats faced 2 seats, so you either sat across from your travel companion or next to your travel companion but sat with strangers unless you were a group of 4. not sure how this compares with first class
i think it's better to spend the extra $$$ on the high-speed trains v. regular (over 1st v. 2nd class) because they save you A LOT of time

Re: Trains in Italy
Thx guys - I heard rumors that 2nd class didnt have a/c and I freaked out! But I did a lot of research and all the new, fast trains do have a/c so we should be fine. All of our trips are short 1-1.5 hours, except Florence to Naples which is 3 hrs i think. I looked into the price difference and it is $150 total to upgrade. Not bad but I don't know if I see a need really.
Ok well thanks so much for your help!

Re: Trains in Italy
I just took it from Venice to Rome in September and we were 2nd class. We had AC, promise!
The only issue on those trains is the luggage storage, there is never enough space and I was super happy that I had a small piece of luggage. The people that had big bags ended up having to move them everytime the train stopped.
Just a friendly word of advice!
