What's growing at your place?

My daylily foliage is a few inches off the ground, butterfly bush has little leaves. All three big Hydrangeas have leaves, the Forsythia are blooming.

Crocus have bloomed their hearts out already and are on the way out. Daffodils are sending up flower stalks and I even have two that popped up in the lawn that are blooming.

My Heuchera are already sending out new leaves and my Hellebores are blooming! Not a lot of flowers, but still, they're flowers.

Lily of the Valley has foliage, as does my Sage. My huge sedum plant is starting but there's a big hole right in the middle, so I think it's time to divide it this year.

I go home and walk around every day, looking for signs of life. Chat Icon

Re: What's growing at your place?

Snowdrops have finished blooming and the crocuses bloom for about two minutes before the sqirrels get to them.
Tons of hyacinths are blooming, as well as daffodils.
Butterfly bush is starting to sprout, and the clematis vine is coming back to life.
Bleeding hearts are popping thru the ground, columbine, day lilies, hostas too. I think the fern bit the dust.
Bellflowers have spread everywhere, have to get those under control.

Sweet william came back, and some snapdragons from last year never died off !

I ordered some plants from Michigan Bulb Company, figured I'd give them a try with $20 off a $40 order and some buy one get one offers. Plants should get here the end of April and then I can start digging away !

Re: What's growing at your place?

daylily's are starting to grow. Can't wait for them to bloom all summer.

Hydrangeas have leaves too.

Daffodils are up already. We have the mini ones. They are so cute. I'll have to take a picture of them to show you.

Our Weeping Cherry is about to start to bloom soon. I can't wait. I love when that thing blooms. Just so pretty. I wish it would stay that way all summer!Chat Icon

And some other flowers that my mom planted, they are mini ones too, but I can't think of the flower name right now. They are purple and just starting to bud now. I'll have to look in the garden this weekend and take some pictures. I love seeing outdoor life! Chat Icon

Oops forgot about my Hostas. I love how they look when they are first coming out of the ground.

Oh and my tulips are starting to come up.....the leaves, not the flower part.

These are the ones I couldn't think of. Miniature Hyacinths

Re: What's growing at your place?

We planted a ton of crocus last year - not impressed! We are still learning I guess.

Our tulips are making their way up, we cannot wait for them to bloom.

I am hoping our peonies make a good comeback. We'll see.

Jen, those are grape hyacinths - because they look like grape clusters.
I like the way the pop up thru the lawn.

Have any ideas for my backyard. After this storm we really saw what can happen to our backyard. We can afford a retaining wall right now. At least 3-5 ft. of the backyard was under water from the stream that is behind our property. Any advise with what bushes would be able to live through something like that once or twice a year? Any plants that love water and are sold on Long Island or that would survive on Long Island. Any ideas would be great. I have pics that I took, I just need to upload them and post them. Chat Icon

Re: What's growing at your place?

Let me do a little research for your backyard. I'm thinking mountain laurel might be good, but not 100% sure.

So much, I love it!

The crocuses, daffodils and hyacinths are flowering. The tulips are up but not flowering yet.

Can see new growth on the azaleas, sedum, creeping phlox, lillies, geum, dianthus, hydrangeas, and heuchera. I can't see leaves yet on any of the deciduous trees.

Ok, found some stuff.
For shrubs, Ilex (Holly) Salix Caprea (***** Willow) Cornus Sanguinea (bloodtwig dogwood - gorgeous red branches in winter) are all flood tolerant and are hardy in our planting zone.
For perennial plants, Aster Novae-Angliae (New England Aster) and Iris Pseaudacorus don't mind getting soaked every once in a while.
For trees, the most of the willows are flood tolerant.

Hope this helps.

Me too! We're going to have fun posting pics this summer, I have a feeling. Chat Icon

Btw, for whoever was concerned that their fern didn't make it, none of mine have started to catch on yet so yours may not be dead. I have to clean away last year's foliage and keep an eye out.

Does anyone have pics? We don't always have to take pictures of only flowers, right? A nice pic of a bud or new leaves are inspirational this time of year! Chat Icon

My hyacinths started to come up, then stopped when it cold again. Hope they aren't ruined. Chat Icon

My daffodils are coming up, but the didnt' flower last year & don't look like they are going to again. One lone daffodil we inherited came up out of nowhere on that 1 warm weekend.
Not signs of life from my hydrangea. I think I killed it. Chat Icon

Hostas & belleding harts are just starting to poke out of the ground.
My sedum actually came up little & looks good. I'm shocked--it was new & didn't do that well last year.

We finally were able to take the ornamental grass out that was right next to the stoop on each side. It looks so much better now. I can't wait for all the pavers to be done and my front yard will look completely different.
