Sorry to do this but may I post a ? for a co-worker

I hope you don't mind me asking this here but I know you are all so helpful

anyway, my coworker is 35 and just attempted her 1st IVF

they retrieved 14 eggs and a few were attempted to be fertilized...turns out they were not mature enough and her cycle was cancelled

upon speaking to the RE, he said her case is a strange one. Normally, the brain sends a signal to the egg to mature and do what it needs to do in order to accept fertilization. In her case, her eggs do not respond to this.

She was told that IVF will probably not work for her and her options are donor egg, adoption or live childfree

has anyone experienced this, any advice to offer?

thanks so much

You have the story wrong somehow... or your friend does.

In IVF: your brain "signals" i.e. hormones (that normally cause your eggs to mature) are overcome by those that you inject into your body.

Sometimes the eggs are harvested too early.

Really... she can always get a second opinion... but this story is wrong somewhere & an opinion via the "telephone game" is likely to hurt more than help.

Nice of you to be concerned though.

I agree with the AP. Something doesnt sound right. Honestly if I were her I'd seek a 2nd opinion.

i hate to agree also but maybe they didnt do her levels right.. i mean i had complications with my ivf but there are meds to help the follies and at a certain size there are mature eggs in there. I would ask for a report of the size of the follies they took eggs from. My re said anything under 16mm more than likely didnt have a mature follie. with me, my ovaries were moving so they were only able to take one follie out. it had a mature egg, which fertilized. Did she use ISCI? I did. DH has variocele. And my one follie made it to transfer.
i get the results from the beta today

Sounds to me they went to egg retrieval too early.

She should definately get a 2nd opinion and ask for copies of her records to see exactly what her levels were when they triggered her for ER.

I have to be honest. I am not even in IF treatments and after 1 IVF I have yet to see a women post that her doctor gave her those three options only. Something is off.

she did not use ISCI, some of the follies were over 20mm....so they seemed large enough but were just not mature.

Thanks for the info. I will pass it along Chat Icon

She did a few IUI's and even though she had TONS of follies, never got pregnant....

her doctor DID say they can change her protocol and she can try IVF again but he did not sound hopeful...I should have stated that

thanks again

when they took blood the day or few days before the retrieval, everything looked great (all of her levels, etc) and they were very optomistic.....

thanks, not trying to play doctor, just trying to get some feedback from others who may have been in this situation. Chat Icon

Re: Sorry to do this but may I post a ? for a co-worker

My SIL couldn't use her own eggs to get pg and used a donor egg program. She had beautiful b/g twins who look exactly like her first daughter. I know she struggled with the decision for a long time, but in the end it all worked out and she has a beautiful family.

Good luck to your friend. Chat Icon
