Kind of new

Hi girls. My name is Jen and I am very active on the TTC after miscarriage board. This is my first visit to this board...kind of surreal.

But my question is this. I am just starting my 7th month TTC post miscarriage. I haven't seen an OB since the m/c and have an appointment next week. My MIL keeps pushing giong to see an RE and it drives me nuts...I didn't think I was there yet. What do you think? when do I go? Is visiting my OB the first step? I have always heard they won't see you before a year...but to be honest I have been really "trying" and timing for a while.

What do you think?

Re: Kind of new

I went to the OBGYN first about 5 months after my second m/c and she had ran some bloodwork which was off, so she sent me to the RE, but my RE couldn't do and fertility procedures until 1 year after my m/c because of my insurance. My insurance states that infertility is dx only after 1 year of no pregnancies, m/c or not. So I had to wait anyway...but he was able to run additional tests during that time.

MyGYN recommended I see an RE after 9 months of TTC on our own. At first, I was in shock and denial and it took me a few months to make the appointment but I am so glad that I did.

I don't think there is a "right time" to see an RE but I definitely think that it can only help.

I wish you lots of luck and lots of Chat Icon !

My personal opinion is, if you are over 30, and trying for 6 months..go see a RE! It can't hurt and all the preliminary testing and such takes TIME.

I waited over a year, closer to two to see a RE and I could kick myself. I just was so sure, that it would happen, naturally. Almost like going to a RE would be accepting defeat. It's not the case. It gives you a little piece of mind, in knowing that you are doing something, you have SOME sort of control.

It is a personal decision of course, but I say goooooo. Wish you the best and good luck ! Lots of

Re: Kind of new

I'm 25 and had no problem conceiving DS. this time around I went to my gyn for bloodwork after 12 months and I have premature ovarian aging and have to see a RE. I wish I went for bloodwork sooner. Im so mad that I wasted a whole year. I would say go.

Re: Kind of new

Thanksk girls! I have my OB appt this week..and I think i'm gong to make the RE appt too. I just want to get recommendations...

I wanted to see Dr. Kreiner but it turns out my insurance doesn't cover. I hear dr. Braverman is more aggresive and I don't think I need that...so I guess we'll see what my OB says.

Thank you so much

Re: Kind of new

Your OB can do bloodwork and some tests in his/her office before you go to the RE. I exhausted all options through my OB before I moved onto an RE.

I also chose an RE who had hours that could accomodate my schedule as your go A LOT for monitoring and bloodwork.

Re: Kind of new

I think you should mention your ttc concerns to your OB and I'm sure your Dr will advise you on what your next steps should be (either they will do some initial testings for you OR they can recommend an RE).

I don't see any harm in getting a work up done. Keep in mind that while you go through all the tests you can still try naturally - and by the time you would even get to a course of action with an RE it'll be a few mths from now!

Best of luck!!!

Re: Kind of new

My personal feelings on this are to go see an RE. I waited the year that everyone says to wait and I feel like I wasted time with my OB. There are a lot of things an RE can help with...you won't go straight to IUI or IVF. They can do a lot of testing to see if there is something going on.

But, this is a personal decision. Maybe you should talk with your OB about your concerns and go from there.

Re: Kind of new

I agree with the previous posts but just want to add that if you are very comfortable with your OB, perhaps maybe you can ask her to run the baseline (day 3) blood work for you to check all your hormonal levels and give you a script to run HSG to see how your "pipes" are doing. These are pretty much the standard tests that RE runs. The only things missing from what I just listed above is the semen analysis on Hubby and the Intrauteral Sonogram. I think this way, you can still be covered under your insurance, if it is more strict on the # of months trying.
I just want to let you know that when I first went to my RE, I counted the first day that DH and I charted, timed BD to be considered "trying". According to my RE, the first day that I was off BCP was medically my Day 1 of trying. According to her and medically, we've been trying for over 21 months before we saw her. From this, we were definitely well over 1 year and covered under Dh's insurance.
Good luck!

It think it doesn't hurt to see a RE. Most RE will def see you and run some simple tests.

Goodluck Jen!!
