shin splints
My husband just started running last wk. The first time he ran 1mile and the other two times 3miles on the treadmill. Today he went on the treadmill and after about a mile he said he had really bad pain in his shin area. Could he get shin splints that fast being he just started? Also if anyone has had shin splints is there anything he can do to prevent it? I read that it could be caused by increasing exercise or not wearing the right shoe is this true? If anyone can share any info I would apreciate it. TIA

Re: shin splints
it could be shin splints, but often stress fractures are mistaken for shin splints...just FYI depending on how severe the pain.
when I was in HS, I switched shoe brands and immediately got shin splints. When I went back to my old one, they were gone. He can run also on the grass (if we ever see it again) to cushion his feet.
I just recently (not switching shoes) got shin splints. I was getting new insoles for my shoes for plantar fasciitis and the woman at super runner recommended powerfeet insoles...since I put them in - they have been gone (and my PF has been the least bad it's been in 3 years).
everything I have read has said that orthodox are no better than the insoles you get in the store.

Re: shin splints
Could he possibly just be sore since he has never run before?

Thanks, in his everyday shoes he has to wear soles for extra soport, maybe he should try it in the shoes he's wearing for running. He didn't even buy new shoes he is just wearing his old everyday shoes so maybe a good pair of running sneakers would also help.

I don't think so because it doesn't hurt when he's walking, but about 5mins into the run he said it was sharp pain and to where he pointed it looks like it could be shin splints but don't really know. After a mile he couldn't tolerate anymore had to stop, but once he took a shower he said he felt better. He wants to try it again today so we will see.

I would definitely get running shoes...they give support and offer flexibility where you need it when you run.
being that it came on suddenly and sharp, it sounds more like a stress fracture than shin splints. My experience with shin splints is that its gradual and annoying, but you can run through it, although shin splints can come in various forms, it still might be better to check with a doctor if he tries to run again and gets sharp pain.

Thanks we will see what happens tmr. He gonna take another day off. From your experience with a stress fx is there anything you do for it? I know when I had one in my food I only had to take time off but I've never got one in my leg.

I have never had a stress fracture, but friends who have have had to take time off. From what I understand, shin splints are often mistaken for stress fractures..
hope he feels better.

Re: shin splints
I needed running sneaker with more cushioning. The running sneakers I awas using did not have enough for me. As soon as I started wearing the sneakers with more cushioning the shin splints were gone and they never came back......

Re: shin splints
I had shin splints bad when i played college sports. I remember I could barely walk at one point. I dont think they can develop from just 2 times running. I agree, with getting the proper sneaker, make sure he stretches his shin (point and flex). Also stretch him by pointing and flexing his toes to the floor, while his legs are out in front of him. Also, bags of ice work well and massaging the shin really helps.
