Another BF'ing question...

OK, Stupid question:

Did you ever wake up DD/DS to breast feed if they were napping? DD has been napping for 2 hours now. She has been feeding every hour to hour and a half. Should I wake her? My MIL told me to NEVER wake a sleeping baby because if she wanted to eat she would wake up.

What are your thoughts?

My opinion is never wake a sleeping baby to eat. The exception would be if the ped told you to, due to not gaining weight or other issues

or if they are sleeping for a long period of time (4+ hours), it could be a sign of lethargy due to dehyrdation in a newborn. Then, you need to wake them

Ok don't panic - I know you're new at this. Here's how you tell: A dehyrdrated baby will have dry diapers.

I think you could wait another hour or so. You want them to be eating 10-12 times in a day and averaging every 2-3 hours.
I wouldn't let the baby go over 4-5 hours at night. You are trying to build up your supply and at this age they are still very sleepy.

I agree with your MIL. Keep her asleep, just look while she is sleeping, if she is suckling a little while she is sleeping, she might be hungry.

Even thouh my supply was fine and DS was gaiining very well, my ped and LC both told me not to let him go more than 3 hrs during the day and 4 hours at night. That was just in the beginning. Now DS is 2 months and I don't wake him to eat anymore. Although I don't let him nap too long during the day because I don't want him to get his days and nights mixed up. You want them to have their long stretches of sleep at night.

Re: Another BF'ing question...

I was told- never to let the baby go past 4hrs.

Take off his diapers, and try to get him up to eat...

Other than that- its ok to let em sleep...
