booking a cruise- agent vs. booking it alone

Does it make a difference if you book a cruise with an agent vs. just booking it yourself?

I booked one cruise two years ago and we didn't use an agent and it was fantastic! Is there an advantage to going through an agent to book it?

We use an agent. Our cruise price went down and she was all over it for us, got us the lower price and upgraded our room. If you book through the cruise line then you need to be on top of any price drops to get them. I like my travel agent. She has gotten us many great deals and looks out for us.

Out of curiosity, what does it cost?

We never used an agent on the 6 cruises that we've been on. I'm too much of a control freak. I want to be in control of my reservation and be able to hear the answers to my questions from the cruise line directly.

Re: Price drops - Check out cruiseshark.net

If you are going on one of the cruise lines it mentions, you can install it and it will email you when the price drops. We saved 400 bucks because of it!

Can you get money back if you booked through an online site like expedia or something like that by using cruiseshark?

Cruiseshark will tell you when the price dropped.

I'm sure that by booking thru Expedia or some other online site (not directly with the cruise line) they are considered your travel agent. If you went thru an agent, you cant contact the cruise line directly yourself, it needs to be done by the agent. I would think that you would need to call Expedia and have them do it on your behalf.

Re: booking a cruise- agent vs. booking it alone

I have an agent and he is wonderful
He specializes in just cruises

he is so knowledgable because he goes on so many cruises each year, he knows he best rooms on the ships, he gets tours of new ships before they set sail!

Its just i feel like i am spending all this money and its nice to have a personal touch, he is available to me by phone or email, if i have any questions. He sets up my transfers if needed

He also gifts us a nice bottle of wine in our hotel room

Me personally would never book a cruise without him, but i know many others that do and they have a great time

Nothing. She gets her commission from the cruiseline.

Liberty Travel matches offers online.

Personally I like talking to an agent. I find out all the information from them, then comparative shop online and let them price match. You get the best of both worlds.
