Dont know where to stay, but maybe you could take the ferry over to Lewes!

My husband and I went to Cape May 2 summers ago and stayed in a BB called the Manse. We LOVED everything about Cape May, the restaurants and the old house, and the BB was close to the downtown and beach area, definately GO!
