Need a quick getaway and soon...WWYD do?

I want sun and beach and lots of relaxation, the sooner the better. I can use the weekends to get there and back and would like to take 5 days off from work -

Would you go on a cruise? Go to an actual island - and if this what you'd do, where would you go?

I will spend up to 1K on all of it and I'm leaning toward a 4/5 night cruise...

I'm dying for a break. I haven't had a vacation in two years. Chat Icon

where are we going?

do you mind a small addition? Chat Icon Chat Icon

seriously though, what about Miami?

it's not too far, doable in your price range, and you won't have a language issue. Chat Icon

I'm so serious when I say - do you really want to go? Bring the little one!

I don't know about Miami - I have family too close to there and if they find out I was there I'll deal with the aftermath of "Why didn't you tell us/come stay with us/" and blahblahOMGleavemealone.

Re: Need a quick getaway and soon...WWYD do?

I would fly to an Island and stay at a nice all inclusive..I am more into that then cruises bc booze is includedChat Icon

Are you going solo or with someone/a group?..if you are going solo a cruise might have more opportunity to hangout with people as they are usually pretty social Chat Icon

i think that i'm going alone!

i don't know how much i care about socializing as much as i just want a total break from everything for a few days.

i could look into all inclusives though...good suggestion!

I dont' really see you on a cruise.

I see you on a beach. in the morning with kahlua and milk, midday with a daquiri, and at sunset with a glass of champagne.

and your journals of course.

go big.

or

try Barbados, St. Lucia, St. Maarten

you know, since you are flying solo, I would just pick some dates and wait until the wednesday before...then go on to Travelocity or some other site with Last Minute Deals and choose whichever is the most bang for my buck.Chat Icon

I love cruises. I would highly reccomend.

The first time I went I thought it was great b/c I woke up somewhere new each day. The second time I thougthit was great because I didn't have to do dishes or really think about dinner or laundry or anything for 7 days.

You can be social or not. You can be active or lazy. Stay on the boat, go on a island--sight see do an excursion, or just take a cab to a beach.

I was on a RC one, and they had singles/solo travelers events, so even if you don't want to paticaipate, you will not be the only person cruising alone.

I feel like all-inclusives take a bit more research than cruises, so a curise might be easier to just get up & go if you are in a hurry.Chat Icon
But on cruises you dohave to pay for booze, but it's not any more than drinking in NYC, just leave room in your budget.

Re: Need a quick getaway and soon...WWYD do?

If you want sun, sand, and a total break from everyone and everything, I wouldn't go on a cruise.

If it's a crowded cruise ship, you'll see the same people over and over again. And if you have a few days at sea, the pools could be crowded and you'd be sitting right on top of other vacationers and their kids. (Not bashing kids - I've seen more obnoxious adults on some cruises than I've seen kids.) Plus at dinner, they'll put you at a table with a bunch of strangers.

For some serious relaxation and down time, I'd go to Aruba, Barbados, St. Thomas.... For a shorter flight, you could even go to Puerto Rico.

If you wanted to party, socialize and meet new people, then by all means, go on a cruise.

Re: Need a quick getaway and soon...WWYD do?

I felt the same as you

My DH can't get away from work, so I am going away with my sister

3 Night Cruise out of Miami
to the Bahamas,

There were 4 night ones, and 5 night ones that i researched as well, but with a 2 year old its hard for her to go longer

Flights are cheap, and if you get an inside room, you can spend around 300-400 for the cruise

St Maartin! a few yrs ago booked a nice place called the Pelican on cheapcaribbean.com. It's not an all inclusive but each room is like a suite with a kitchenette and there's a deli on site! beautiful beach, casino, pools!Chat Icon

Ooh, yes-- I forgot about Puerto Rico. i think it is closer to 4 hours, but there are direct flights--really easy.
I was in San Juan for a day at the end of a cruise & would go back. There are a lot of hotels right on the beach, in /near San Juan, but you could also go more exotic--I have heard Vieques is great. ( but it may involve a tiny plane.)

Chat Icon I booked a cruise out of Miami! And I'm totally gonna go on the Jamaican bob sled in Ocho Rios.

I am SO EXCITED to go away - I was freaked about going alone but whatever, I'm going to really enjoy doing NOTHING.
