Can you help this sushi rookie?

I'm pretty sure DH is taking me to H20 in Smithtown this week for dinner. I have never had sushi and really don't want to. But he is determined to have me try it. What is a good starter for a rookie like me? I really don't want to try it as a full meal, just in case I don't like it.

Is it straight forward? (ie: If I like salmon, it would be smart to get a salmon roll?) Do I eat the entire thing, or is there something I am supposed to unwrap?

Here's the menu:

TIA!!!!!!

mmmmm sushi.. I'd stick to tuna or crab, lobster, shrimp tempura. If you dont normally eat sushi, I would not recommend eel or squid. That dragon roll looks harmless. no, you dont unwrap it, put a little wasabi on it, dip it in soy sauce, and it will prob look too big to shove in your mouth whole, but you will make more of a mess, trying to take dainty bites out of it. enjoy, you will prob love it.

The California roll is the quintessential starter roll. The one at H2O has king crab instead of the normal imitation crab meat.. so you might want to start there. I'd probably vote for the Obi Roll if you want to try a cooked roll.. or if you want to venture into 'real' sushi territory I'd got for the spicy tuna and shrimp tempura roll. Since your husband is going with you and likes 'real' sushi, I'd wait and see how your venture into the California and Obi (or tuna/tempura) goes. If you like those, he probably will have ordered a spicy tuna.. which is a great classic roll.

Good luck! I hope you love it.. please let us know how it goes!!Chat Icon
