Dunn's River Falls - A must do in Jamaica?

Is Dunn's River Falls worth checking out? Is it a good half-day trip or does it take an entire day?

Half day and I would recommend it once.

Stay away from the shops..they will suck you in at the end.

I agree with Blu. It's a great experience.

Although after you do it, you turn around and say "Wow, I really shoudn't have done that, it's really dangerous!"

I agree. I would definitely do it but once you get to the top, I DO NOT recommend going through the shops or buying anything. They will rip you off and con you into buying something you didn't want.

I'm glad I did it once in my life...I agree though that the algae was slippery. And for some reason the tour group we were with made us stand in a single file line and hold hands as we went up which I refused to do because I needed my hands to balance myself.

LOL - I said the same thing at the top of the falls!!

Avoid the shops, but if you drink coffee, you MUST bring some Blue Mt. coffee home. It's amazing!!

I think thats the way they do it for everyone. Which is both good and bad. I was SO concerned about one person going down pulling everyone down.

DH was behind me and then behind him there was a little kid and then the rest of the kid's family. There were points where my DH was the only one holding onto that kid - he would have been down the falls if they didn't put us in a line.

Re: Dunn's River Falls - A must do in Jamaica?

We just did it this past summer, it's a 1/2 a day trip. It was a lot of fun, but when you look down, you'll think "what was I thinking??!!!??"

Bring water shoes with you, they won't let you go without them. I had to buy some because I didn't have any.

Don't even go through the shops, it's a little scary.

While it was weird to hold hands with people, it was necessary because you helped people, and people helped you. I wouldn't have been able to do it on my own just holding on, too slippery.

Re: Dunn's River Falls - A must do in Jamaica?

Half a day.

I'm kind of torn -- because I can see how it's a must see for some and not that big a deal for others.

DH and I went on our HM and I didn't know you had to CLIMB the falls. I just thought you go and look at them. (Which I'm sure you can still do, but we were in a tour group who was gonna climb and my DH wanted to do it.)

It wasn't until we were in the park did I realize we'd be climbing up in a human chain. Chat Icon

I was VERY scared since the water is rushing at you and I'm not the most balanced persron and well, I ain't a skinny chick either. Chat Icon

Holding onto a stranger's hand to help balance me was not fun at all. It was so freaking slippery and having rushing water coming at you doesn't help either. I'm short too--so places where it was knee deep for most, were almost waist deep for me. I also slipped and fell twice, and bruised my knee up. They tell you if someone is about to fall to LET GO of them and let them fall. Chat Icon I understand why this is said, but it made me uneasy when we were around the slippery spots.

That being said, I did find the falls to be quite beautiful. It was nice to be able to say "I climbed that". Plus we got the video they offer you and tons of pics of us in the falls having a good time.

These are 2 pics from the falls:

While we were there, 2 people were carried out because they sprained/bruised/broke ankles.

It was at that point that we realized that we shouldn't be doing this. Chat Icon

It's fun to do at least once. Definitely a half day activity.

We did a half day trip with our cruise a few years back. It was fun, but seriously you wonder why more people don't sue...it is very dangerous.

Don't see how it would take a full day. I don't think it took more than 2 hours....

We enjoyed it and glad I did it, but prob wouldn't do it again.

This is not for children, anyone with any physical disabilities, etc.
