What do you do with makeup that you bought but don't like?

What do you do with makeup that you bought but don't like?
and you can't return the item?
For some reason I hold on to it and use it every once and while. I feel so guilty throwing it out.

I usually hang on to it for a bit and give it a couple tries down the road in the hopes that maybe my skin has changed or I was having an off day/month. 
If each time I tried and used it and felt the same way, I toss it (or offer it to my sister to try out.)

depends what it is, if its lipstick or lip gloss and i don't like the shade i'll layer it with other colors until i get a shade i like, if its foundation, i'll just toss it in the back of my makeup case
