Okay, so I'm a zest virgin...

I bought my zester in the supermarket and 2 lemons. Can someone walk me through zesting a lemon?

Do you zest the outside, or peel first and sort of get the inside white part? It's for these lemon cookies I'm making.

I'm not a zesting pro but I believe that you zest as much of the yellow part as possible. Once you get to the inner white part it's bitter so you don't want to add that to your zest pile.

Okay, so it's actually the yellow part you want? That part is okay to eat? Thanks!

Here is what my zester looks like:

I know that if you run it along the lemon you get long strands. But how do you get it to be small, grated pieces? Do you know?

sorry I'm not sure. My zester is different than yours. It looks like a handheld mini grater so it just grates smaller pieces

Yeah I was going to get something like that but my DH thought I was crazy since this said "lemon zester" specifically on the package Chat Icon Chat Icon After looking a bit online, I think I can zest it into long strips and then put it in my food processor to get smaller pieces.

You would need a microplane. It looks like a long thin grater. I guess you can always cut the strands up that your zester peels off the lemon.

Exactly right. I use a mini grater too. The zest is the yellow part.. the white is called pith and you do NOT want that.

What you bought is called a zester but it is more for decorative stuff or using the part with the 5 or 6 holes and running it along the lemon (don't forget to wash it first!). You are better off using a microplane or the smallest holes on a box grater. No need to have to wash 2 pieces of equipment to get the same results Chat Icon

I agree you need a microplane...when you zest make sure you stop once you see the white part of lemon or lime it is very bitter.
