Grrr i want to do my darn taxes already!

I don't get it - NOTHING has come in the mail yet for taxes except the stuff from my accountant.

No W2's
No bank statements
No mortgage statements
NOTHING!

I know they have until the end of the month to send them out but i don't understand why it takes so long - your printing from a darn computer a rec then mailing it! Sorry venting.

Re: Grrr i want to do my darn taxes already!

Aside from my work statement, I was able to print everything else online (even my mortgage info).

Can't wait until next Wed when I get my W2 so I can figure out how much $$$$$ we are getting!

I work on a lot of this stuff to issue it, and its A LOT more then just hitting print Chat Icon

I can't speak for everyone issuing them but i now work 6 days a week to try and get all of it out as quick as possible.

you can't do your personal taxes yet anyway, all of the tax forms for 2009 are not released yet

Re: Grrr i want to do my darn taxes already!

We received our bank info only. I would go online and print it out. I was getting anxious too so, I went online printed the statement out and then went home and it was in the mail.

W2's are being distributed this week at my job.

no it totally stinks, but you have less of a chance to get audited. they are reveiwing all the e-filed ones last year because there was a TON of fraud. and according to IRS's website its taking on average 3 months to process your refund, and if its your entire tax return it will delay the whole refund Chat Icon

You should still be able to efile once the form is finalized...it is true that if you have certain forms the IRS will not allow efile, however last year this was not a restricted form, so I am assuming this year it won’t be either once it is final. You can't efile any tax return that uses a form that isn't finalized yet. I have only been able to efile basic returns so far...

We are ADVISING our clients NOT to efile if they have the Form 5405 (the $8k credit) and to "paper file" attaching the closing statement as a schedule because of the review risk, but clients can still choose to efile, we can only advise, it’s your return.

That being said, if you need money ASAP for some reason, another option is to do your regular return leaving off the form 5405 ($8K credit) and efile it, you'll get the 'regular refund' you were entitleed to in like 10 days & then amend it a few weeks later just for the $8K credit and submit the amended return with the closing statement... so you have some options you can discuss with your accountant.

Good advice. We always e-filed because we weren't claiming much. But this year, new house, new baby, etc. we're actually using a tax accountant and having him do all the work for us. I would imagine he's going to suggest doing the paper filing as well. At least now I can manage my expectations better. I was spoiled with e-filing the past few years.

Re: Grrr i want to do my darn taxes already!

yippie got the mortgage statement & bank statements today now just waiting for the w2 forms!

Question we did a TON of home improvements and kept every receipt but mostly it was drywall, drywall materials, smoke alarms, etc. I am pretty sure none of that can be written off or can it?

I know the back door we put in can be so i have that receipt copies along with the stuff that came off the door.

YOU CANNOT e-file if you purchased your home after Nov 6 and you want to get the credit check irs's website using the newly released IRS form for the homebuyers credit. you also may not go back and ammended your 2008 tax return if you purchased your home AFTER nov 6, 2009.

ALL this info is easly found on the IRS's website

Good to know, the form in the tax program I am using is currently not showing any such restrictions on efile. It could be because the one I was looking at I hadn't put a date in - if it's an invalid efile it will give me an alert. Honestly we do the best we can but with the hundreds of forms and schedules it's really impossible keep up, once you have a client IN the situation you do the research and find it out. For the client in the situation it's the only tax matter they have so they may know it before us at times!

As for amending, I was talking about the 2009 return, not the 2008.

Hopefully for most people they don’t need the money that desperately to matter – it’s only a few weeks - but for some who have fallen on hard times, you do whatever you can for them to try to get them the help they need immediately!

My understanding is that you can amend the 2008 return, the 5405 form seems to read that way stating that it can be attached to the 2008 or 2009 taxes. We closed in Dec, I was thinking we could amend 2008 for the credit and efile 2009 so as not to delay that return

the new form must be used on purchases made after nov 6, 2009.

I don't believe you can use the new form on an amended 2008 tax return because it states that its to be used on a 2009 or 2010 tax return and doesn't say it can be used on an amended 2008, but it is not very clear.

I think I would do what kara suggested. And e-file you 09 and get your refund. then amend it after you get your normal refund, and apply for the credit then. its at least guaranteed to work since it says the new form must be used on home purchases after nov 6, 2009 which is you, and can be used on 2009 or 2010 tax returns filed via paper.
