When do infants get their shots?
just curious - my girlfriend said her other children got them right away but she just had a baby boy and they want to wait a few weeks.
When did you babies get shots?

Re: When do infants get their shots?
Most shots start at 2 months. Newborns generally get their first dose a Hepatitis B in the hospital. We refused Hep B so Miranda has not had any of those and we also did not allow her to start any shots until she was 5 months old and she only gets one shot per month instead of 2-4 at a time. There is really no science behind the CDC schedule for vaccinations. The reason is that they feel most parents are more inclined to bring their baby to frequent well baby checks when they are a newborn as opposed to when they are older so they feel they have to most access to getting vaccinations in children at this point. Our pediatrician has been very supportive of our delayed vaccination schedule and so far we have had no reactions except some crankiness and a sore leg after her Prevnar shot.

I am not a mother yet, but can I ask you why you chose to start at 5 months? Shots and their schedules scare me.

Pretty much for that reason. 4 shots at a time, side effects, autism risks, etc scared me. If we didn't have plans to travel I would have waited even longer to start. There is no reason other than the CDC suggests it to start at 8 weeks so I did a lot of research, spoke with friends who delayed vaxing and/or didn't vax and we made our decisions from there and came up with a schedule we are comfortable with for Dtap, Hib, Polio and Prevnar. We haven't decided when we'll give her the first dose of MMR and if we'll give the chicken pox vaccine at all. We will give her hepatitis B when she is getting ready to start pre school.
